New '77 CP-16 Owner

Hello All! I have been reading through the archive and enjoying them all and the abundance of information posted on here. Thank you to all that have posted. I have recently purchased a 1977 (#540 I think) and it looks like it is going to need some keel work and new wood for the quarter berths. I guess I will be improving my fiberglassing skills. I acquired this beautiful boat to teach my kids how to sail and to do a bit of camping exploring with them. Good fun ahead! Glad to be here.

Thanks Ted, right now I am in southern West Virginia. There are a few lakes around here and I am planning to take a trip to Assateague Island and explore the sound a bit. Looking forward to it.

Ahh sounds good. My son and I camped on the island years ago - great place - wild horses and good fishing. I am planning trip to eastern shore of chesapeak next fall- will trailer my eclipse down from Long Island.

Have you ever looked around at a marina and realized that sailors tend to use their boats more than power boaters.  I am just saying.....

  Although I'm a satisfied 23 owner, I still keep a lookout for a homeless 16. My wife says I have a problem...I agree! I keep my 23 moored but would love a 16 to trailer sail and explore.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. It feels good to be part of the "Familia". I just raised her sails in the driveway to see if she has everything she needs to sail and so far so good. I think a nice winter time project may be to convert the original rudder to a foil. So thanks again and I will try to post my progress. I am sure I may have a question or two if I can't find the info already posted.

Hi Chris..  great to see a new member!   last spring i brought a van full of high school students down to  white sulpher springs  to work on a habitat project for a week.. we had a great time - not sure if that is anywhere near you .. seemed pretty far south for us!  -  we are in northeastern pa...   I sailed our 23 in barnegat bay for 3 years - that is bob23's neck of the woods..  or water, i guess.. 

good luck with your projects..   i have a few of my own.. but won't get to them till next spring at the earliest..   the Asseteague trip sounds like fun.. how old are your kids?   they sure are lucky to have  a  dad who is planning such an adventure!   jt

Hey JT,  White Sulphur Springs is not too far from here. We live around the New River Gorge area and manage an adventure here and there. My kids are 9 and 11, and are pretty excited for sailing. Once in awhile we travel through your neck of the water on our way to visit relatives on Long Island and Connecticut. Maybe we'll even get to sail Barnegat Bay sometime. Ahh, the joys of trailer sailing.

nice to know that  your kids are excited.. that makes all the difference!    it is so important to seize that opportunity when they are young..    when my son was 13 i asked him if he would like to do a bike trip..  he agreed so i  signed us up for BRAG  -  bike ride across GA..  and we ended up doing it three years in a row, and it was a wonderful experience..   and it was a wonderful  confidence builder for erik.    the same will be true for your kids and sailing ..  we will be anxious to hear stories  come spring!     jt

Chris, I'm not sure the 16 will "do" the Gauley.  But lake Summerville sounds right.
