I have been reading and lurking for a month or so. Now that my boat is in the water for the summer, I thought that it was time to say hello. I am not a new owner - I have had my cp-16 for about a decade. I sail it primarily at Hardy Dam in Michigan and have been delighted to hear several of you write about your sailing experiences on this big body of water.

Many of you have posted your boat numbers. Are you getting these from the serial number on the hull? Mine is ABV00459M77J. I know the boat was built in 1977, but does this number give me other information?

BTW - Went sailing today - bright sun - brisk wind. Had a blast.

Welcome Rick!
ABV00459M77J...the 459 is the number boat you have/they made. Mine is a 1976 and is number 254.

I hope to get out this weekend to sail for the first time. Do you have any tips for a newbie?

Thanks,
-Kevin

Yo Ralph . . .I haven't seen the Patricia Lee yet? Sailing has been good. The lake survied the flooding with no problems like mud, dock issues, etc. (whew). We went late yesterday and had a great sail and expect the same today. Carole and I typically go late in the day - like 3 PM or so and sail into the sunset. Been good breezes. Only washout weekend was last week with all the rain. I still got up there and took care of a few mainteneace items.

What's doin?

RickI've been giving thought to going out on the big pond again, this weekend however, probably too many big loud boats, at least until Sunday aft.  Maybe I will drag it out Thurs, I have it off, much more fun during the weekdays.  Thanks for note of encouragement, I did finally cancel the for sale ad.
Welcome to the Assn.  Do you keep  yours in the water or are you trailering and from where? I live right here in Croton, but we trailer.........................                                      Doug

Doug,
I live just east of Grand Rapids, but I do have a dock at a place called Woodruff on what I believe would be the east side of the water. It's a ways upstream from Oxbow Park and directly after Wolverine World Wide's property (if that means anything to you). You can cruise by and see Sensei tied up.
The wind was terrific today (July 4th) - I did yard work - You are correct that the place would be full of speed boats this weekend. One of the things I like best about Hardy is that on many weekdays, I am one of the few people on the water.
I also plan on going up this week, although I do not know exactly which day. It depends a lot on the weather. I am a teacher so I can be selective about which days I head north. Maybe I will see you on Thursday.

Hi Rick...
I may have seen your boat a couple of years back, before I really knew what a Com-Pac looked like in person, other than photos. I recall it was white and had round portholes, but don't remember if it had a name on it.  It was a doll of a boat however. I had put a fishing boat in at Newaygo state park and was fishing the shorelines for Walleye. I motored up river a long distance and saw a sailboat docked with a group of other boats, on the east side of the river, but still in a fairly wide place on the impoundment.  I'm not sure where the Wolverine site is. I usually put in at 4 seasons landing, that is just north (upriver) from the dam on the east side of the river and a small and very protected cove.  It is a great place to sail out of, you have to know your stuff, the high banks and the twist of the river change the wind direction a lot, that is one of the reasons I like the pond so much.  In one of my earlier posts I mentioned sailing in the Gulf area, you can point your boat tie the rudder off and sail all day in the same direction, that being a little boring for me,  I'd rather do some tacking, I'm more of a back and forth sailor.  I'v been thinking of going out Thurs aft if there is wind, might catch you on the water.  Maybe Troy will be out there too, I think he is mostly a week end worker................  Doug..

Hi Doug,
Well, the name of my boat is not on the hull. I took it off when I installed the ladder, and never got around to replacing it. However, if you put in at the state park my boat would be downstream -not up. So, you probably saw someone else. I am actually not too far from the dam.
I agree with your assesment of Hardy. I have been out on Lake Michigan with friends and their much larger boats, and although it is always fun, it really is not for me. You sail out - you sail in. At Hardy, I can pull up close to shore, achor the boat, get out and eat lunch, take a swim, climb a dune, walk along the shore and then climb back into the boat. And many days, I can do this with little boat traffic.
I usually put in at a place called Reynolds Landing. It is not in a protected cove; however, I have had good luck there. The water gets deep quick and the landing is broad and flat. Oh, and it's not busy. When I put in several weeks ago, there was another trailer in sight. They ask for $5.00 which is a bargain for me considering that I only use it twice a year.
We just bought a new house which the previous owners neglected for years. Much of the past three weeks has been spent getting the painting and the yard under control. I think it is time to do some serious vacationing.
