Building Oars and Leathering Oars

hi Everyone,

Had a good time building these oars.  8' long.  1st three feet from the handle down the loom has 2 layers of fiberglass.  Paddle tips fiberglassed for strength and abrasion resistance.  Hadn't worked with leather before and it was interesting to make and install the oar leathers.  Many coats of spar varnish as a finish.

Cool! I knew someone who built oars for a Slipper 17.  What boat will you row with these?

These oars will be used on the SCAMP sailboat that I am building.....and seeing that I just started building it, they probably won't see action for a while!

Hi Jason:
   I fell in love with the Scamp since I first saw her in Small Craft Advisor. She looks great for a minimal cruiser. I'd love, however, to build a Puddle Duck Racer! The oars look great. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the encouragement Bob.  I think building the boat will be a solid challenge for me and I will take all the encouragement I can get!   Ripping down Sitka spruce at the moment for spars (that's the wood I wanted to use for oars but it was expensive so I risked it and went for aspen which was cheap and clear and sure does look good....hopefully performs well too).
