Ahoy Mates
Anyone know the size of the wheel bearings for a 1984 compac 19 trailer.

Thanks

MacGyver

The bearings in it now will have to be taken up and sized that way, they have different axles and such, and frankly this is the best way to do the job.
I have worked on a trailer before where the one side took a different bearing from the other side. Odd, yes, but thats what it was.

Yep, there's no real telling for sure without pulling them off.  Com-pac didn't make the trailers, and who knows what the trailer maker used on any particular trailer.
Some bring extra new pre-greased bearings (or entire hub assemblies) with them on trips in case one goes bad on the road.

I travel with all the parts including a hub, pre-greased, stored in a Ziploc bag, ready to go for one wheel.  If I can't fix it on the road, I won't have to wait for a mechanic to make another trip to find parts.  I have the usual AARP, & Boat US, assistance insurance for my cars, camper, and boat trailer.  I also carry a jack that WILL LIFT all vehicles off the ground if repair attempts are needed.  You should try your jack system including wheel chocks for a disconnected trailer as part of a pre-season or pre-trip check out: some jacks will easily fall over. On one of my vehicles the factory equipped jack would not lift the van high enough for a tire change!!!  I won't even mention the name of an American brand vehicle that left me stranded with a spare tire that I could not install.  Eventually, some one took pity and loaned me their jack.

Of course, with my Citroens automobiles no jacks were needed, and I have driven home with two flats, on three wheels . . .    Citroen tow vehicles are neat: you raise the hitch ball up and down with the hydraulic suspension, not the hand crank on the trailer.  The added weight of the trailer and its forward momentum from braking activates increased braking power from the car's rear brakes and anti lock brake system.   Not bad for a 1955 designed car.

Pull the old bearings off.
Set them on the counter of a good bearing house, like Berry Bearing, and buy another set plus a new grease seal.

Every bearing has a manufacture number on it. Look it up in a bearing catalog.

NEVER-NEVER-NEVER wash out a bearing with solvent. Just hand pack 'em and sit em back in.
This ain't rocket science.

I am confused about this solvent wash thing..... I solvent wash using parts cleaner all the time on small bearings and including my industrial bearings.......
IMO you just have to pack them right which is really a simple job to teach someone.
I even spin them to ensure the grease is in there.....

Aside from the spin, my mechanic friend has taught me this way along with 3 other old mechanics over the years, so I am puzzled....

So why no solvent washing? Where is the issues?

If you think about it the needle bearing or ball bearing really never touches the race.
And that's a good thing.

Why wash the lube out of a bearing to allow this to happen?

A good hand packing just displaces the old lube. Never allowing two metals to touch.

At the Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry there is an exhibit.

There is a 3000 lb wheel hung on a shaft sitting in a plain [no rollers] bearing with a small tube feeding oil to the bearing.
There are two hand cranks for kids and adults to spin.

Cranking the right handle turns a positive displacement gear oil pump. Pressure is displayed on a gauge.
Crank that oil pump up to about 1/4 lb to 1/2 lb of oil pressure.

Turn the crank on the left to directly turn the 3000 lb wheel.

Once the oil pressure drops to zero the wheel shaft locks up on the bearing tighter then a .... in church.

It's such a cool exhibit and I hogged it for many minutes. Your floating 3000 lb on 1/4 lb or less of oil pressure and again no metal touches other metal.

Mac,  A solvent wash with new, clean solvent is OK.  But unless it is virgin, you may be adding contamination to the bearing instead of washing it out.  If the bearings are already good, and one is just changing the "oil" so to speak, just repack'em .  As Skip says the dirt will be forced out with the old grease.

Oh, by the way, wear clean elastomer gloves when repacking to keep the junk on your hands from getting into the grease.

I pulled the bearings and they were 1 1/16" on the outside and 1 3/8 on the inside. We are hitting the road to Lake George tomorrow.

Thanks for your help everyone!!!   ^^^^^^__/)^^^^^

Replaced mine this spring, glad I did! One "outer" was distorted and ready to fail. NAPA matched what I brought in, had three brand choices, went for Timken , mfgr'd in Mexico. Did not have time to shop elsewhere, the Timken plant here in Columbus has long been bulldozed. Races are sold separately ! So are the seals behind the inner bearings that are inserted from the external side of each wheel , backside exposed to view. Change out to the blue colored marine grease , NAPA carries ( well my store had one can)

Suggest reading other threads on this site addressing packing / install. One might have to wait a while to have this done at a marina $$$, bearings are bearings, a trusted local auto shop could do with boat on or off. If you are handy, learn how on this great exchange, some on U-Tube. Light jacks should not be used with boat on, maybe go with stainless cotter pins, right Salty?
