New to the site and Com-Pac ownership

Hi all,

I just purchased a 2001 Picnic Cat after selling my 22' C-Dory, a nice little shallow draft power cruiser that wasn't quite right for me and my family. I have sailed a Herreshoff America a little in the past but did not grow up sailing so at the age of 50 something I am just starting to learn. The Picnic Cat seemed like a good stable boat to learn on, well-suited to our shallow bay near the Cape Cod Canal. This one is in very nice shape. I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions but my first one is how to find my hull number. Any tips?

I think I have one of the first ones built in my shop at work possibly.
It is one of these Herreshoffs............... I just made a new rudder and changed the boat back to stock at the heel plate for the shorter shaft engine (owner had it modded to run a long shaft for when he had it on the river) and also made a brand new centerboard for it, with my special epoxy coatings on it.

He is getting it ready for sale when I am done with the work. Bottom job is done and looks fantastic

Welcome to the site and the community.  I have had Picnic Cat #64 from new in 2000.  Not many of us here (more on the Yahoo group dedicated to the type), but plenty of close sisterships and a wealth of information on small sailboats from Com-Pac.

Thanks for the welcome, everybody. Another question: has anyone had trouble getting a Honda 2 HP motor down from the tilted up position? The lever seems to be stuck and I can't jiggle it loose from the stern - would help a little if I were left-handed and a lot if my arms were longer. This is keep me from taking her out since I need the motor to feel comfortable about getting her back on the mooring (not to mention the possibility that I'll have issues with wind). Any tips would be appreciated.

Bob, if you love the Herreschoff America look for a Horizon Cat. The HC is the America perfected by Compac (as I am sure you know). The elimination of the cb trunk makes a huge difference in the usability of the cabin.
