I have the the original installed Garelick auxiliary swing down motor bracket on my  1980 C 16.  The mount and all components appears to be in great shape. My plan is to power up with a purchase of a 4 stroke 2.5 hp. I see some of the info going around that some brackets are for either 2 stroke or 4 stroke due to torque. Am I going to have to replace the existing mount? Will the existing unit handle it? Please advise.

Skip, note this is posted in the 16 section. Your 16 year newer and 3 foot longer boat is not comparable to Catpaws. The motor brackets are worlds different (I've had both).  Also how about starting a new post on that topic and not thread drift Cat Paws post? Automatic transmissions on boats and a CP16 motor bracket question aren't exactly related. ???

Catpaws, You'll be fine with a 2.5hp 4 stroke engine on the original 1980 CP16 mount since it is in good shape.
The wood or plastic bracket that the motor clamps should be inspected closely.  In fact, if it's plastic I bet the mount has been replaced since 1980.  They were wood back then.

The plate is made of thick laminated wood. I believe it to be original.  The stern is nice and solid. No stress cracks. Hope to get going with pics soon. Working on it.

The plate on my 1978 is also laminated wood and has served me well all these years while using a 5 hp on it................re-varnish once in awhile...............also check the bolts through the hull to make sure they are tight...................nies

The wood one on Wind Rover a CP-19 rotted away.
Steve cut new wood. Did a good job. Holds a 6 hp, 2 cylinder, 2 cycle.
