sailing magazine/book club

Does anyone know of any good sailing magazine? One that is not packed with advertisements or articles on large luxurious sailboats. I enjoy seeing and dreaming about larger sailboats but owning a CP-16 and 23 I am looking for a magazine which would be more geared to them. 

Also years ago there were a few book clubs for boating type books. Anyone know of any of these?

Well you might try Small Craft Advisor.

I had a script but let it lapse years ago.

Ditto on Skip's recommendation for Small Craft Advisor.

Another magazine to consider is Good Old Boat.

Those are the only two subscriptions I currently have. Years ago I had subscriptions to the bigger Sailboat and Trawler mags, but not any more.

I subscribe to Small Craft Advisor for the stories of adventurous trips in small boats; to Good Old Boat for practical do it yourself advice and projects; and to Practical Sailor (I get the digital version) for reviews of equipment, paint products etc. They all serve different purposes - I don't think there's a single mag that covers all the bases.

I also regularly read the blogs at www.sailfeed.com, which usually have new content posted every day.

None of those however are as valuable to me as CPYOA.

Hi Guy,

Small Craft Advisor is an excellent mag specifically for small sailing boats, features travel, adventure and how to articles. I also subscribe to the British monthly mag Practical Boat Owner, has a lot of stuff relevant to small boats as well as the big money type. Features a lot of practical projects as well as cruising and sailing stories.  Both these magazines have stories of great sailing destinations, but as I live in Australia they are only dream material for me.

 I have over the years subscribed to most all sailing mag. and the only one I still subscribe to is the Small Craft Advisor...................it is the only one targeted at small sailboats, would recommend to anyone , all the rest are geared to the 50 foot ocean sailors................nies

   I currently subscribe to Small Craft Advisor (the above comments are right on), Good Old Boat magazine which seems to be aimed at bigger boats but recently have focused a bit on smaller boats like ours. My favorite magazine is Messing About in Boats. Not online it is a grass roots
off the beaten path black and white magazine based out of Massachusetts in which all articles are submitted by readers. Heck, they've even accepted and printed some of my stories! It covers the whole gammut from kayaking, rowing and sailing small boats. I believe they  will send a complimentary first issue if you call them.
   If you need to be amused by color glossy photos, this mag may not be for you. But if good writing about true boat adventures strikes your fancy, give it a try.

I'll be having my article on celestial navigation, "Lines of Position", published in the Mar, 2014 issue of Good Old Boat.

I used to write quite a bit for them, but they have shifted their emphasis more to the do-it-yourself-repair type sailor and have less need for the wind-and-wave stuff I usually write about.  I have written an article for GOB about the Hutchins Company that builds Com-Pacs (Jan-Feb 2005), and reviewed the CP 19 (Sep-Oct, 2009) for GOB  In  fact, it was while researching those articles that I stumbled onto this website.  I've been hanging out here making a pest of myself ever since.  There is a list of my work for GOB here:

I highly recommend GOB, they are a fine sailing magazine. for sailors with day jobs, like us,, not just an advertising catalog for expensive yachts and overpriced gear.   Check out their website:
