Removing, replacing detailing tape

I thought this was discussed, but a search did not bring it up.  I just ordered the detailing tape kit from ComPac.  My 23 IV comes with stacked tape just above the waterline, 2" navy with 1/2" gold above it.  Then about 6" below the rubrail is another 1/2" gold stripe with an arrow forward, and the ComPac logo aft.

Has anyone done this replacement and what is the best way to get the old off?  I'm replacing it because it is faded, particularly the gold, and there are many places where poorly placed fenders or ill advised docking adventures have caused it too rub through.

For removal, you might try one of these: http://www.amazon.com/3M-7498-STRIPE-WHEEL-W-ARBOR/dp/B00063VT0G

I haven't got around to redoing mine yet, but I did buy a 3m stripe wheel in preparation.

brackish,

Try softening a short section of tape with passes of a heat gun on LOW, then lift an end edge, grab hold, and pull off. Repeat with next short section 'til done. Be patient, and take your time. Think of it as spending "quality" time with your boat!

Clean old tape area gel coat surface thoroughly with Fast Evaporating Acetone.

Hopefully, there will be a slight difference in gel coat color where the old tape was which will help you to align the new replacement tape without going through too much trouble.

Good luck - and have fun. She'll look great in her new cove and boot stripes.

Brack, When I was in business doing that (11 years) I tried multiple methods. That striep wheel is okay, but can damage things and is a regular issue. I never used one after I was out of Autobody school due to that reason.

What I do is on the solid color, use a heat gun, a few passes will soften the stripe and then you get a edge.
After the edge is grabbed peel slowly, keeping the vinyl soft enough to release, but hard enough not to stretch. You will see it happen and pick it up pretty quickly.

Your gold strip probably wont be the same. If it is gold foil, then it was made of Polyester film. If so, work at it the best you can and dont get mad...... it is a real PITA.
IF it is gold metallic, it will peel like the other stuff but will break apart more often. The flake in it makes it less stable with age.

After these are removed, a great adhesive remover is made by 3M, called wax grease and adhesive remover..... It can be found in a white quart metal can with red writing, great stuff on gelcoat.
After using it I recommend you wash down the boat.

If you cant find 3M stuff, The only thing better is RAPIDTAC Remover. IT IS AMAZING. but it was commercial when I bought it.... not sure if consumers can get it or not.

There is also some plastic edged razorblades I used to buy...... I will try to find a name for you through my buddy/boss at my second job as a graphics installer. Those things are nice, have a edge to them, but doesnt damage gelcoat, etc.

After you get the stripes off, tape with regular tape along the old edge so you have a easier on the eyes edge to retape on.
