Hi guys...I have a Merc motor on my Compac 16 and it's mounted on a Fulton MB 1050 motor mount.  Issue is this bracket doesn't have tension springs and it's quite difficult for me to raise and lower it from in the boat.  I've looked on line to see if this model has or could have tension springs added to it.....Any ideas???

Thanks,

Dawn

Hi Dawn:
My motor mount looks just like yours but I could't swear it's a Fulton MB 1050. Mine does have springs on it but it's still not very easy to use. Maybe my outboard is too heavy and overcomes the spring tension. Maybe Fulton has a website and sells springs.
My mount actually gets jammed after beingh pushed forward by the motor and I use a small prybar to unjam it. Caveman style, right?

Man that sucks Bob...there's got to be a better way right???  someone gave me a new mount but I would like to try and rectify this one so I don't need to drill new holes  ???....

Hey High Tide:
We had the same problem on our C16.  The motor would still go up and down with a little 'heft going up.  It went down easily.  I replaced the middle piece of metal with a matching thickness piece with just two holes in it.  It is now a fixed mount about 1/3 of the way down.

It works just fine if I don't spend to much time on the foredeck with the engine running.  The price was right.

Pacman

I saw a similar type of motor mount with a small block and tackle (probably a boom Vang from a small boat) attached to an eye bolt on the bottom of the motor mount pad with the other end attached to a pad eye on the top of the transom.

That guy could raise and lower his motor with one hand.

I seemed like overkill to me at the time but now, at my advanced age and decrepitude, it seems like a good idea.

If you shop ebay the price could be right and it might be a simple solution to your problem.

I'm thinking...It's a WEST MARINE Product check the catolog and maybe the supplier to West Marine [the mf'g. of this sparse moto mount] would have a parts list.
You'll have to disassemble the thing and put the missing spacers, springs, keepers back in place.

Yes it is similar to a West Marine lift.  I'm going to check parts and pieces and see what I can find.....as always thanks for the tips...I STILL haven't got this boat out of the driveway yet ha ha ha...but maybe over Christmas break....I can't remember when I've wanted to do something so bad!!!  This sailing stuff is pretty darn addicting......

Dawn,
Do you know the weight of your motor? The Garelick Mod. 71040 on my 16 is rated at 59 pounds and the company says not for 4 stroke motors ..because of torque. The springs on my unit must be a little weak and the motor weighs 58 without fuel/oil. The motor would "volunteer" itself to the deepest setting at random times. I didn't like that.
Garelick will not sell parts, so I added a limit stop in the adjusting handle so the lowest position is set. Similar to what Charlie did.Works well and when sailing I can tilt the motor well way out of the water.

If you want to replace your unit, Garelick (800-457-9795)may have the same bolt spacing as your Fulton.

Thanks for the pics....I see the tension spring you have and that's what I was missing.  The more I read and researched I found my mount did not come spring loaded.  So a friend gave me a different mount that works great.  I can raise and lower it myself from inside the boat.  Had my first sail Christmas day!!!!  Everything went AWESOME!!!  Thanks again and keep up the great posts.
