Hooky on Dec.5th

With 69^ sunny weather and a light wind out of the NW, I played hooky this afternoon, bent on the Genoa, raised the main, and sailed away from the dock for a nice two hour wind-noise-only sailing fix.  Only a couple of fishing boats working the deep docks jigging for stripers and me on my CP19/II "Andiamo!"(formerly S'go, S'go - the Admiral liked the Italian for Lets GO! and thus permitted me to change the name).

I slapped an umbrella rig on my trolling pole and fished at 4 knots for 30 min and Wham! A nice 23# 32" Stripped Bass was on the line and in the boat 15 minutes later.  One of the fishermen roared over to watch me haul in my catch and remarked how "I didn't think you could catch fish from a sailboat, it legal?"

After I released the fish (slot limit at this time of year prohibits taking Stripers over 27 " in length), I explained "yes it's legal, and doesn't smell like gas fumes!". We had a nice conversation, I stowed the fishing gear and tacked back to my dock thinking to myself what a great day of "Hooky".

great story ,  TG... quite the question about the legality of fishing from a sailboat!      we had that balmy weather yesterday - as i was leaving the academic building, i stopped to chat with some of the grounds crew who were trimming bushes wearing t shirts.. ( hmmm,   the guys were wearing the t shirts, not the bushes!)     24 hours later..  there were snow flakes teasing us on the way home from dinner this evening!    jt

Interesting story,

From time to time I will have some one ask me, do I fish off my boat?

I calmly say, if I wanted to fish, I would have bought a fishing boat!

I'm sure fishing is fine from a sail boat, and I have fished for many of years, I just want to sail now.

Great story.  I fish off of my 23 all the time and have done so on every sailboat I've had.  When in the salt it is rare for a trolling rig not to be out.  Every overnight on Bay Springs Lake starts off at dawn with a quest for bass, crappie or bream, whatever is there and biting.

A few years ago BIL and I were off Cape San Blas in the Gulf and saw a little day sailer tacking back and forth over the same area.  Went out there to see what was going on and found ourselves in a large school of Dolphin (no not Flipper, the cold blooded, very edible kind).  Guy in day sailer was catching a couple on every tack.  We joined in and limited out in ten minutes. Well that's my fish story but most of the time fishing is no problem, it is the catching that eludes me.:)

That's exactly what I want to do... not necessarily fishing, although that sounds good too.  I'm talking about playing hookie and going sailing.  I love the image of catching Mahi Mahi from a sailboat.  That's a nice story.  Gosh, I love this forum.
