Wrinkles new winter home

So two years ago I purchased a CP19 which wouldn't fit in the garage where we were storing our CP16.  Simple solution -  beg the Admiral to let me build a new garage to fit the 19.  (Actually I cheated and told Brenda it was a new potting shed for her gardening.)  Well that worked really well until I decided to buy a CP23 which of course won't fit in my second garage.  No problem, I'll just tell Brenda I need to enlarge the big garage right?  "No way!" was her response as I remember it.

I just couldn't store Wrinkles outside up here in Wisconsin, so I (notice I didn't say WE) compromised.  Instead of enlarging the "potting shed" I added a quick and cheap car port style area to the south of the garage.  A couple of tarps and I have a really nice winter storage spot.  In the summer I'll be able to back Wrinkles under it between sails and keep her dry and pretty well shaded.  I need to clean up the area, finish installing the tarps and complete a few items on the car port to top the project off.  It sure will be nice not to worry about the snow building up or a tarp wearing a spot in the hull this winter.

The CP19 inside the garage is our previous boat that we are storing for her new owner George.  See, I really needed that garage...I  mean potting shed.

Very nice, mike. You did build it big enough for your future Dana, didn't you? This seems like one of those evolving projects...next year a "wall" will evolve to replace the tarp. After that, a floor. Then a 2nd floor loft addition...the list goes on and on...

I'm jealous, Annie Belle is spending another Minnesota winter under a tarp. I sure felt better when she was in a barn.

While I don't apply the philosophy to the size of my boats, the general rule of "envision the largest you think you will ever need, then build it twice as big" has served well for many projects. It's a bit of a chicken and egg situation, if you have the room, you'll find ways to fill it. But as you've shown with the progression in boat size, often storage considerations take a back seat and you acquire stuff whether there is room or not, so might as well build those garages/shops/barns/car ports as big as you can from the start. This is coming from a guy who lives on a 0.11 acre city lot who is dreaming of something bigger then a 1 car garage someday....

i guess this proves that a 19 would fit in my garage huh mike. providing that is just an 8 foot opening. damn im gonna be thinking about that again arent i?

Shsssssh!  Brenda will figure out my master plan!  Just keep referring to it as the Potting Shed addition.

The garage doors are both standard 9' wide x 8' high standard.   A 19 fits in just fine.  I did make the garage 28' deep so the entire boat trailer fits in with enough room to walk around the tongue.

Dang it!  I forgot about the Pacific Seacraft Dana.  "Oh Brenda, I need to add on to the back of the Potting Shed now."

Actually the 23 is the last boat I'll have in Wisconsin.  In the next year or two we plan on moving down to a condo in Gulf Shores / Orange Beach where we would love to slip a Dana 24.  Of course that Pacific Seacraft Orion 27 looks awfully nice ............

It'll be nice when you move down to Orange Beach...I can just envision a mid-winter gathering of the Compaconauts! Talk to PeterG here on the site...he used to own an Orion.
You don't really think your fooling Admiral Brenda, do you? Hey B: Here's a shot of a real potting shed: Well, thanks to the "new and improved Photobucket", there is not a shot of a real potting shed. But take my word for it- it doesn't look anything like yours!!!

That's a nice home for Wrinkles!    Should keep the snow and rain off of her nicely.

Be prepared for an adventurous first sail of 2013.  Wrinkles will be pretty steamed when she realizes your old love has a better home than she does.  Might want to keep that a secret!
