Bowspirit Retro fit

Hey Folks,

Has anyone ever ordered Com-Pac's retro fit for the earlier CP-16's.  I'm looking to get one, but I'm not sure if I just need the complete kit they sell.  I know I need toe bowsprit, bobstay and plate, and the new bowrail.  My question is does all that come in the complete kit or is all seperate?  Anyone ordered this and know?  Thanks!

I know you can buy the individual pieces from Com-Pac, but if you're going to do the upgrade to Com-Pac's specs the kit is probably cheaper. Call or email Com-Pac. They are very helpful. I ordered a tang for one of my sidestays and it had countersunk holes. I called to order another and when I mentioned  to the person I was talking to that it had countersunk holes she said that didn't sound right and put me on hold. Next thing I know I'm talking to one of the owners who said it must have been machined wrong. He dropped a new one in the mail for no charge. Very nice.

If you do the modification take pictures of the process and post them in the images section.

I put a bow sprit on my buddys CP 19 and all was ordered piece by piece.
The factory will assemble all that is needed [except a tube of 3-M 5200 slow set goop]. And I added some SS flat washers just for grins. :lol:

The bow pulpit does not normally need to be changed.

The kit goes on very easy, the only thing that needs to be done, and done neatly is to notch the teak wooden bow sprit where it contacts the bow 'chainplate' for the foward standing rigging stay. [From front of mast to bow stay].

Forward stay is long enough to make it to the attachement point on the bow sprit when the turnbuckle is unscrewed a bit. Mainly because the bow sprit goes 'up' slightly and kind of meets the pin for the turnbuckle on the end of the stay.

The hardest part of the job taking the longest is...
1~Digging out the two nuts used to hold the bow ring that is on the boat and used to pull the boat onto the trailer.

2~Those un-screw and with hammer and chisel and a heat gun to soften the 3-M 5200, you will need to bang and beat that SOB trailer eye off best you can. [Sorry girls].

3~Find the new chainplate with the kit and old trailer eye, put it all back together with new nuts and washers. And goop. At this time I also install the dalphin cable at the hull. [See item 6 below].

4~Next I pulled a line from the trailer eye through the front of the new bow sprit's anchor roller and to my winch. I put the hurt on the line and pulled the new bowsprit back tight against the hull, and MEASURED to make surw that's where I want it and carefully drilled a tiny 1/16" hole through the hull, and found the hole inside the boat. All looked well so I finished with the correct size hole and bolt washer goop into the hole, through the hull, another flat washer, and locking nut. I think it was a 9/16 bolt. Not sure. Take the line off after sinking and bolting the first two bolts.

5~Start at the back holes and work your way forward, both sides.

6~When that is done have a heavy fellow stand on the bow sprit 'bending it down' a wee bit and attach the dulphin from bow sprit to thull chainplate installed in step 3 above. Make sure the head of the pins face toward the hull and the cotter pins away from the hull so you don't scratch or chip the jell coat with this pin. I glued a chunk of rubber between the hull and head of this pin. It's all detail Son. That is what makes a good job.

It's an easy job takes about hree-four hours. You'll put an hour into just getting those two nuts off the trailer eye. Maybe more. :D

Hey All!

I just got my retro fit in the mail from Hutchins.  I was all psyched to see it.....Note of warning...The complete bowsprit kit....is the complete bowsprit :).  It lacks the bobstay chainplate and bobstay.  Not a huge deal though.  I have extra rigging and turnbuckles with which to make a bobstay.  

However!!  For those of you with bowsprits, I have a question regarding the chainplate itself. Is it basically a simple chainplate?  I was looking on Dwyer's website and they have a basic chainplate (part # DH 7408 http://www.dwyermast.com/items.asp?cat1ID=40&cat1Name=Hardware&familyID=13&familyName=Chainplates+%26+Stemheads)  that looking at different picture would work.  The real bobstay chainplate is just a chainplate that fits behind the bowloop, correct?  Just double checking before I order something totally wrong.  Any help would be awesome!

Looks about like DH7048
But without having it in my hand I can't say if it fits.
The one I installed was a bit rounded and not just a
flat plate,
Plus it matched the bow ring, as you suggested.
And it raised up off the hull so when bolted the 1/4" eye
has a way for the daulphin cable to pin through. No biggy.
I cover all this in two places in other posts. Head stay ought
to be fine. skip.

Did you contact Com-Pac about the chainplate and bob stay? I'm curious why that is not included in the kit.

Then I have a parts list for my cp-19 that lists everything on the boat. The list came from Com-Pac. And was in my owner's manual.

I looked up each part number and made a 'please price the following' list and e-mailed it to Com-Pac. They sent me the price and bill of material to both me and the owner of Wind Rover, Captain Rank.

That's the boat that I put the bowsprit on. Craig [skip].

Update:  Well, I called Matthew at Hutchins about the bowsprit kit and he confirmed my fears.  The bowsprit kit is only the SS frame and teak insert (and hardware, but they forgot to send that so it was 2nd day aired).  However, he was very quick to offer assistance because of the miscommunication.  He gave me a nice discount on the bobstay and chainplate and free shipping!!  

I havem't installed it yet.  Waiting on the bobstay and chainplate.  Pictures soon forthcoming.

hey Craig, did you end up doing this?: "going 7/8th rig, staying with the slightly larger main of the 16/1, and using a 130 as the working head sail." how's that workin' for ya?
