I just built a new storage area and companion way steps.  The electrical panels and the radio are located between the two steps and there is plenty of room for future expansion like vhf radio.  The panel is also easily removed by taking 4 knobs off and pulling the entire panel out for access to the wiring.

The bottom steps flips up and the front of the step flips down to expose a huge storage area for a stove, pots, pans, and other large items.

Behind the electrical panel is a large storage area that is accessed from the each side of the box for things like wallets, keys, cell phones, handheld VHF, etc.  I also built in a DC plug in this area to charge cell phones, handheld VHF, etc.

Looks great! Is it painted, or is that some type of synthetic material?

Very nice.  Hope you post a picture of it when it is in place on your boat.

Fair winds,

I don't know how much clearance you have between the top step and the cockpit sole, but if you have enough room you could put some small fiddles on the sides and back of the top step, and maybe do some type of anti-skid on the back half of the top. I've found that any flat spot in the cabin tends to collect stuff, and the fiddles/anti-skid would help to keep it from rolling off.

Are you going to attached the stairs to the boat in any way (other than the wires)? Don't want the thing skidding around. We have a small trash can that we store under our step, and it surprisingly stays in place with just 4 little rubber nubs on the bottom of it.
