Hi everyone!

My wife and I decided to get into sail boating and both really loved the Compac 19. Finally found one nearby and after 2 really rough days I brought her back from a little over a hundred miles away.
She is really dirty and leaking from everything seems like.
It is a 1989 Compac 19, really nice overall after we cleaned her up.

Hopefully we will have pictures soon.
Now, since I know I am going to be flooding questions about parts, etc really soon, I figure I would offer up my expertise. :)
I am a 10 year Fiberglass  technician at West Access Marina in Carlyle, IL.

I handle all sorts of things from sealing hardware, rigging, etc. And I specialize at bottom work as well and a lot of topside repair.
They call me the do it all guy. (MacGyver) Certified West System, Cert. AutoBody repair, (turned boat tech) AWS cert Stick weld, MIG weld, and am really good with Harken and Interlux products.
I am glad to help answer any questions if anyone has any on repair, etc.

Now I have a few questions....... The teak is in okay shape, but we are pretty sure we want to replace it. Is there a place to get the teak ready made? or is it a woodworking weekend for me?

Any one have issue with thin gelcoat on the deck area? seems a lot of areas on this boat are really thin, and not in the usual wear points either, it is just unusually thin.

Any place to buy the rubrail? All my sources don't offer this style........

Lastly (for now) is there any way to replace that bright blue carpet? LOL, the main floor part, obviously the bilge cover is self explanatory.

Thanks! look forward to being on here, and really looking forward to sailing her in a few weeks!

Hi Jason - you will have tons of fun with this project. I have spent the past year restoring my 1988 CP 19 and loved every minute of it. My recomendation on the teak is to order replacements from Hutchins. Same for the rub rail. They are a family owned company who still offer most of the original components at reasonable prices. You will of course have to drill, mount, bed and varnish the teak but at least the parts will be pre-cut and milled to the original specs. Hutchins is generous in sharing their technical knowledge too.

Welcome to the forum and the world of sailing!    We're glad you're here and may well need to tap into your knowledge of boat repair.  There are always questions about it so I'm looking forward to hearing your input on them.

I agree with Wes. One of the nice things about Compac is they are still in business and support all of their boats.

For the last 4 years there has been a Compac Rendezvous at Carlyle Lake, organized by one of the forum members. There were 7 or 8 boats there last year--I've been to all and they were a blast!  Check out the announcements page, the event is coming up in August.  If you can make it, I highly suggest it :)

I haven't noticed any thin gelcoat, but then again I don't have a way to measure it.  Maybe your boat was sanded/polished too aggressively?  I did notice the forward footwell vertical wall, below the bridgedeck is fairly thin fiberglass.  I installed big 'ol tether ring there and found the glass is only about 1/10" thick, as a rough guess.

Compacs are known to be fairly well made so unless you can see the glass substrate or filler, probably wouldn't worry about it.

Here's a pic from a Carlyle Lake Compac Rendezvous raft-up, just to tempt you..

And another..our CP19 and "Toolman"s Eclipse.  Recognize the Marina? lol..

jason,

i purchased new teak hand rails from west access marina last year at clr.  i believe i paid $12 a piece for them.

i'm looking at painting the hull of our 19 with perfection.  perhaps i could get a quote at this years clr?

ps
be careful of bob23.  he'll claim there is a forum "fee" and will let you work it off in trade.
after traveling back and forth from il to nj and living in his shed for a year while performing chores around his place,
i recently discovered this to be false.

according to salty 19, he is the one to collect the fee.  so...it's off to oh this weekend with my tools!

i can be soo gullible some times!

Jason:
Welcome! Pay no attention to Crazy Carl. There's a reason he's called Crazy!
It's true that membership here is free but I've been authurized by the Emperor of the Northern Hemisphere to collect a $5000.00 maintenance fee from each new member to fund, ah, maintenance- on my boat! Yes, you can work this modest amount off by performing some minor tasks on my 1985 23/2. And contrary to the underlying tone of CC's allegations, my shed is quite a nice place to reside. I'll even attach a photo of it here:

Let's set the record striaght: Carl never did show up at my house. Said he got lost on the New Jersey Turnpike. Yeah, right.
In looking over your technical qualifications, I'm sure we can waive the above fee if we can all send you our boats for winter repairs.
Welcome! Are you sure you want to be thrown in with this lot?

Welcome Jason, glad to have you aboard.

If the teak is not split, it sure does come back nicely with a cleaner/brightener application, then the finish of your choice.  Unprotected teak grain raises over time, so sanding is not the answer,  too much material to remove.  I happen to like the character of the raised grain.

Curious about the thin gelcoat.  How are you determining this?  Are you seeing the glass layer through thin spots?  If so, may be time for a cat/poly job on the topsides.  I'm partial to Imron, with the proper protection of course.

A picture or two would be nice.

Starting from top to bottom as it has been a couple days since i was on here, My boss (the wife! duh!) has been keeping me busy with working on the boat. our target is to be sailing in the next couple of weeks.
The neighbors say we are working too hard, I tell them when I go to take a break my wife busts out the whip, so I dare not dilly dally too long! LOL

She is cleaning the inside and wow!! nice!!

Anyway, Wes, I did call hutchins, thanks for that, about 200 and all new teak! not bad really, and I will probably do this in the winter since I will be redoing the deck. They sent me a price list as well, so I can honestly say I wont be getting those cockpit cushions my wife wants anytime soon. Yikes! I work on boats all the time, but never knew the actual costs of some things.

I will be getting rubrail too possibly, but we were able to restretch this back into place, and Rich at hutchins said that the new stuff would need to be stretched, good guy, and knowledgeable, enjoyed talking to him.

Salty19, My wife and I saw before and after pictures of your boat and it didn't register to me, I remember your boat at the marina now, and named the owners of all the regulars in that picture, LOL
I am amazed as to how nicely that the topsides cleaned up on yours, did you just sand and buff? what did you use exactly?
I am pondering using 800 and moving up from that, then to buff the hell out of it. I am hoping to eliminate the old numbers burn in and the stickers he had up front for registration. She never had a name so don't have to mess with that.

Carl, I have been eyeballing those same handrails up there, but I am afraid if I put those on they wont match the other new teak when we do it all. But perhaps we are blowing it out of proportion on the teak, It is my first boat of my own, I might be being too picky about some things....... I am a perfectionist to a fault at times, and end up going overboard (no pun intended)
My wife and I really want to make the boat look awesome again. We thought about using perfection ourselves for the sides possibly if they don't clean up well (winter job though)
Talk to Ric Golding at West Access Marina about getting that Perfection job done, we don't necessarily do that kind of work, but with the economy Ric has been taking on other work and typically I am at the helm. I am probably the top tech there (no bragging meant here, I am just really the only tech there) and I work with Ric to decide what work to take on possibly. He has to look at the bigger picture (liabilities, etc) and I have been trying to pick up topside repaint jobs.
Besides perfection paint, I have been thinking about Automotive car paint, specifically a kind i cant think of right now, not base coat clear coat, that I used to paint a old iron ceramic tub with. Super strong, and really nice, holds its shine really well, and lots of colors to choose from.

Bob23, I am not sure that I can do all the winter maintenance, but I will surely try! got to work of these dues somehow! who knew boating was so expensive!
I thought being married was a big expense!
Is there shed fees? or is it free to stay there? and does it have a porta potty? or just a galvanized pail?

Brackish, The teak has that raised grain on some, and We are possibly just noobs to the whole boat situation as I never in my work life really cared what peoples boats looked like, just more of how my repairs looked and doing honest work and making things right.
I am going to use Cetol on it (as per my marina boss Ric) and see how it turns out. I will have to rebed it all and hopefully that will turn out well. Maybe then reassess the situation in the fall/winter for the big projects.

The thin gelcoat is going to be there at the august get together unless i get a wild hair and re-gel some spots.
I can see glass in a few spots, and not in the usual wear points....... maybe the guy was rough on it over the years washing......... I have never seen this before on any boat......... and I have seen a lot of boats.

Another issue we have is in the beige knotted rope non skid, we have a lot of damages, like the gelcoat nonskid just popped off, perhaps hail damage over the years? not really sure, But it looks as if I will be sanding it all off and repairing it with the deck this winter. I plan to use Interlux non skid paints. Hate to do that, We love this non skid style.......but the water penetration........ poor fiberglass........

I found that I have a deck issue too....... but learning what forums are, I am going to post that in the cp19 part.

Thank you all for posting on here! We are glad to be here, and plan to do the August trip once I find the posting on here!
Otherwise, once I here from the office that the "ComPac group is coming" I will certainly ready our boat for that time!

Thank you all!

Jason:
There are no shed fees and thus, no porta-potti. It's roughin' it, man!
Have you heard of Kiwi-grip non-skid? It was reviewed in a Good Old Boat magazine sometime last year and a friend of mine redid his 1970 Morgan 30 decks with it. Very nice, very easy to apply and not all that expensive. Almost too good to be true! Check it out.
Welcome, glad your'e here and we look forward to hearing about your adventures- both working on the boat and sailing her!

Jason, I did a write up on the refinishing process a while back.  Yep, wet sand, compound, polish and a lot of cursing, Tylenol and patience.

Here's the link.

BTW, I don't live around there, just visited during the Rendezvous.  kicknbug is the local guy.

I'm sure you can make it just as pretty.  Anyone can do it with the right materials and time.
