After I decided to move up from the CP16 to a CP19 a couple of years ago Brenda said I could buy any boat I wanted as long as it had a blue hull.  Well of course I went right out and bought a CP19 with an off-white hull with brown stripes.  Of course being a good spouse I purchased our CP23 with a blue hull, right?  Oooops!  White with brown stripes again.

Since I prefer to keep the Admiral happy, I am in the process of covering the brown stripes and eventually painting the hull a royal blue.  The old name was painted on and it refused to come completely out without sanding all the way through the gelcoat, so painting was going to be necessary regardless.  I decided to go with Interlux Perfection after reading lots of testimonials about how EASY it was to tip and roll a flawless glossy finish.  Let me start by telling you how much I hate painting.  I don't know why, but painting just doesn't give me any pleasure.  It may have something to do with the fact that I truly suck at it!   I prepped the brown stripe and started painting away.  The results are, well, OK.  Not great.  Just OK.

I think it looks better than the faded brown stripe and it will be an improvement.  I plan on getting out my HVLP sprayer and do the royal blue the right way.   I hope that comes out a lot better than the white.  I'm sure the roll and tip method works for others, but not for this non-artist.  The stripe looks better in the pictures than in person.

I guess since I named the boat "Wrinkles" and not after Brenda, I should at least give her a nice blue boat like she really wants.

Mike - echo your experience with rolling and tipping Perfection. They should re-name this technique Roll, Tip & Sand It Off Again. That's what I did, twice (I'm stubborn) before giving up. Good news: Perfection sprays beautifully. Thin it 40% with the "slow" thinner and spray away. Very proud of my finish now. I went with Flag Blue on the hull, Hatteras White (cream) on the deck. Sprayed the smooth parts of the deck too, then rolled (no tip) the non-skid areas with Interlux's non-skid additive mixed into the Perfection. Awesome results.

Wow!  I'd be thrilled if mine turns out half that nice.  Next boat I buy will come with a blue hull.

Sure, Mike.  We've heard that before.  :)

I am with you on brush or roller painting. Hate it.  Stink at it.  Try to avoid it.
Spraying seems like the only way to go.

Kick, I'm thinking about the next boat too.  Island Packet 32 Pilothouse. And a very tricked out CP16 for trailering. Come on retirement!

Well it won't be blue any time soon.  Our forecast calls for 2" of rain over the next 5 days.  I told B that I need to enlarge the garage I built 2 years ago (to house the Com-Pac 19) so I can work on the 23 inside.  I didn't get a very positive response to that idea.

Working on installing new wiring in the mast in the meantime.  We anchor out a lot, so I wanted to add an all round light on top of the mast.

You can sign me up for a Pacific Seacraft Orion 27.

Fair winds everyone.
