securing anchor?

as we look ahead to next year's sailing season and, quite possibly, a new jib for Adagio,  I am wondering about the current set up that we have for securing the anchor while underway.   The previous owner  set the anchor up this way

when we are on a starboard tack, there seems to be some chaffing going on with the bottom of the jib..    any thoughts?    ours is the original model, and i don't imagine that we will be investing the money to install a the bow sprit that  comes with the later models of the 23..    thanks!  jt

There are a few posts in the recent past about this issue, I think in the 16 area (do a search for anchor mount and anchor mounting).
Basically metal anchor brackets bolted to the bow pulpit.  Looks OK and not expensive.

The bowsprit is real nice for this purpose as well as moving the center of effort forward for less weather helm, and to allow for a larger leach on a genoa.

Another idea is to add a short piece of line to the tack of your jib "IF" there is room up top at the head for the sail to raise fully on the furling foil.  This will bring the foot of the sail a little higher, possibly missing the anchor, and gives better visibility.  I use a short piece of 3/16" amsteel line for this purpose.  As the new sail stretches I'll need to shorten the line to keep the furler swivel in the proper orientation in relation to the top of the shroud.  So I had the jib and genoa cut 4" shorter to allow for this stretch...it's enough to clear the pulpit and not distort the sail.

thanks Salty,  like most things having to do with boats ( and perhaps life in general)   every  solution is a compromise of one sort or the other!   i have the whole winter to think this through along with fitting an all around light at the mashead and probably replacing the wiring to the steaming light.. and...    :)  jt

I think I'd lay the 8 lb Danforth anchor on the deck with the tips of the flutes snuggly held in protective plates so as not to roll around on the deck and damage the Fiberglas. Need a plate for the stock as well.

The chain in an arch on deck with the rode attached and fished down through a anchor line thingy to the rope locker.

Everything ready to go in an instant. I don't know about parking it up on the aluminum bow pulpit.

How fast can you drop anchor and still have the line attached to the boat?

Yea, Hawsepipe. I just had a brain fade when typing this post. Thanx Tim.

" ..   just wasn't sure about putting even more holes in the deck, but, if done right, i guess there should really not be a problem " well I'm thinking less problem then hanging an anchor on the pulpit. You'll need three pads for the anchot. Two for the flutes and one for the stock.

Skip,

The "through a anchor line thingy to the rope locker" is called a Hawsepipe.  Webster - hawsepipe n (Nautical) a strong metal pipe through which an anchor rope passes,

thanks for taking the time to respond, everyone..   that is what makes this site such a great place.    I end up checking it for updates a few times each day.    I did see a boat up in Camden ME  this summer that was similar in length to the 23, and the anchor mounts were on the deck..   just wasn't sure about putting even more holes in the deck, but, if done right, i guess there should really not be a problem..   jt

My CP16 has the anchor (vinyl coated) hanging from the bow rail via a pair of SS hangers and it works very well. One of the hangers is hinged that allows quick and easy deployment.  After several serious road trips it "hangs" in there nice and tidy and even supports the mast. I'll photograph the setup, it's really very simple, and I imagine it's available commercially. I just "joined" photobucket, so give me a day or two to post a pic (slow learner!).

In a similar vein, I assume the anchor line goes down through the vent hole on a CP16. There ain't no other way out!

Edit: I just noticed in the photo of Adagio, that she has the same hole in the foredeck. I guess the 16's is double-duty!

thanks Marty,   i will look forward to checking out your photo.     at this point,  most of the anchor rode is in a bucket which is kept in the locker in the cockpit.   it has a shackle which is used to connect it to the smaller piece of chain that is attached to the anchor as you see it in the pic.     i have only anchored once this season, so i have not given it a whole lot of thought.. i guess  it will be more important next year if we get off for some overnight trips like we are hoping to do.. and, of course, in an emergency,  it will be important to be able to deploy the anchor in  a hurry..      thanks for taking the time to respond!  jt

I'd love to be out on the water, but duty calls... have to help the "boss" with setting up a baby shower for my youngest daughter. At least the eats will be good afterward (if any are left!). But, never fear, I spent about an hour in Pegasus mopping up moisture from all the rain (how does it get in!!!). The boat gets wetter in the driveway than it does on the bay! I'm thinking of running a little ceramic electric heater to dry it out... good idea, or what?

Also, installed the two remaining LED lights under the forward deck. The heavy duty Velcro hold real good. Now have mucho light down below. Plus I found a really cool mini lantern in Walmart for five bucks. It has 2 LED settings and 1 red flasher. Runs on 4 AA's). One caveat - The packaging says "keep in dry area", ha, ha! I am keeping it in a ziplock bag until needed. BTW, I noticed that Harbor Freight has some good prices on SS turnbuckles with shroud fittings, plus some other SS stuff. Can't verify the quality, but...

Hope to see you at Nockamixon,

Marty K.

interesting question about moisture..   i think that we have been lucky..  the cabin area of adagio has been very dry,  even after riding the hurricane out at the dock. i was sure that there would be some wind driven rain below.   the one area where i have found a leak is the inspection port on the bow..  i guess there was a vent there at one point, but now just a plate..   we were sleeping aboard one night this summer when it was raining, and i felt some drips on my feet..   this is also on the list of things to be addressed now that the boat is on the hard..

duty calls here as well..  library duty on a sunday afternoon.   i am impressed that so many students are here, but i bet that we would all agree that there are other things that we would be doing!   enjoy the  left overs!  jt
