Hello ComPac Sailers,

two years ago, after a long search, I bought one of the rare CP 16s (ยด79) here in Germany. I love my Boat and want to give him new Sails with a Genoa. On this ocasion i want to spend him a Bowsprit. What is to change with the Rigg or anything else?  In the Part list of Hutchinson there is an differant Boom for the CP 16/2, do i need this?

I am very happy with your forum. i learned very much about my great little Boat.

Greetings from Bavaria

Claus :D

Wie Gehts Claus,
I am coming over to your area again in July.  Will be in Erlangen for 2 weeks doing a computer system checkout with Siemens.  I just happen to be taking two friends from Erlangen sailing next week for the first time when I get back from Disney World this week.  Where are you located in Bavaria?

I am a new owner myself.  My boat is a 1983 16/I.  I would suggest the Idasailor rudder if it does not already have one.  You can do a search here and the Yahoo Group Compac site and read what others have said.  I saw a great improvement from that change and requires very little effort to do.

That is all I have done to mine except some trailer modifications for drive on convenience.  So that is all I can offer.  Good to hear from you in Deutchland.

If you are close to Erlangen, maybe we could get together and talk sailing over a Weizen or two.

Auf Wiedersehen.

Well just last week I installed a bow sprit on my friends Com-Pac 19. He purchased the $500 kit.

1~The hardest part of the job will be taking the two 9/16 inch nuts off the two threaded ends of the bow ring used to attach the strap to the boat in order to pull the boat up onto the trailer.

From inside the 'anchor rope locker' you will have to remove the fiberglass and paint overspray from the threads and spray on some 'rust buster type lubercaint' on the threads and let it soak a while. It will take forver to unscrew these long threads with the limited swing allowed for the ratchet and deep well socket.

In hind site I'd hack saw the loop off of the bow and pound the two ends back into the rope locker and re-install a new eye with the required stainless steel anchor point that is used to attach the bow stay under the bow sprit. Sometimes called a 'dalphin stay'. An electric paint stripping gun will help soften up the 3-M 5200 slow set goop used to seal the bow loop. You'll have to beat it off with a hammer to get the loop to move.

2~Attach the new stay to this bow ring point with the turnbuckle end.

3~You may have to do this...If your boat has a foward stay attached to a chainplate at the very front of the bow, the bow sprit wood will have to be notched out in order to fit flush to the hull and around the foward stay that will no longer be used to tack the head sail. By the way, anchor the anchor off the new bow sprit roller by drilling the shank of the anchor and pinning it. That's another project for later.

4~Have the your helper stand on the two stainless steel drilled flat bars on edge so that they fit flush with the hull's 'toe rail'. These flat bars will be pushed down on top of the rubber rub rails somewhat. Make sure the bow sprit is as far astern as possible. Mark just the two last holes [closest to stern] and drill a 1/8 inch pilot hole on each side. Check inside the boat to make sure the holes exit where you want them to be. [On the flat factory re-inforced fiberglass. Not on the curve of the hull/deck splice].

Then finish drilling the correct size hole to match the holes in the flat bar. Goop up the bolts and push them into the holes and install the washer and lock nut from inside the boat. Have your helper hold the bolt head as you crank down the nuts.

5~Pull down by hanging your weight from the bow sprit, and keep your helper's weight working foward and if necessary tighten the dalphin turnbuckle in order to pull the bow sprit flush with the toe rail of the hull.

6~Work your way foward, hole by hole, side to side. You will be pulling the flat bars to the hull's shape, working it foward.

7~No need to fab up a new head stay. The old one from the mast will reach to the bow sprit's end.

8~Use lots of 3-M 5200 slow set goop when assembed. 'Easy as pie'. 'Don't miss it if you can'. skip. Good Luck.

Servus Darrel,

thank you for your reply. I think too, the idasailor rudder is one of the most important changes i have to do, and i did order it today.
I cannot expect the arrival!!
My home is near Munich (Allershausen), if you are in this area send me a Mail, the idea with the weizenbeer is a good one!!

Claus,

You do not need a new boom. One of the differences between the 16/1 and 16/2 is a larger jib. Com-Pac moved the forestay out with the bowsprit and went from a a 3/4 to a 7/8 rig. You will need a new forestay if you want go to the 16/2 set up. You will also need to move the hound up the mast to change to a 7/8 rig. Com-Pac also added spreaders. I'm not sure you really need them. Email com-pac and ask if spreaders are really needed.

The boom on the 16/2 is 6 inches shorter and the foot of the main is also 6 inches shorter. I would stay with the larger main.

Yes, i will ask Hutchinson about the spreaders.
I will inform you.
Thanks for your help. I know much more now!
