Broken bobstay chainplate

Hi All -
Upon returning home from an excursion to Tomales bay I saw that sometime during transport
the bobstay chainplate ripped/broke in half near the middle (where the upper U-bolt hole is). In retrospect I'm guess the proper procedure was probably loosen it substantially before trailering (or even pulling the boating onto the trailer with the winch - is that the case?).  Anyway - does any have suggestions for the best way to handle a repair?   It seems that replacement would required removal of
the front U-bolt which I can't imagine is a trivial operation.  Since the U-bolt appears solid, is it reasonable to use some simpler means to attach to the bobstay?
  many thanks...Tim
