Ok, so I finally had the time to set up our Compac 19 that we bought 14 months ago.  I scrubbed the decks, burnt the bottom of my feet,  vacuumed the inside, checked the bilge pump, installed the CDI, burnt the bottom of my feet, raised the mast, hoisted the sails, installed the bimini, ran the o/b, set up the anchor, chain , and rode,   Did I mention I burnt the bottom of my feet?  And I was wearing shoes at the time?  Man it's hot outside!

Everything looks good 'cept one item.  (sorry, i've only been sailing for 7 years and i haven't learned all the terminology)
As you can see in the picture, the spring at the base is broke.  This makes it difficult and possibly dangerous to let the sheet out.  Inspecting it, I cannot see any way to disassemble it.  Do I need to replace this item? 

I'm not particularly fond of the routing of the main sheet, so I may go with a mid boom traveler or a traveler on the transom.

You can try putting a new spring on. Just like putting a key on a key chain

   Looks like you remove the whole cam/block assembly from the boat with those 4 screws. Then I bet you'll see how to replace the spring.
   Yeah...it's hot out here in Southern NJ. 91 degrees, 59% relative humidity at 11:06 am. Yesterday hit 103 degrees in the shade...I was out sailing and came in at noon because of minor heatstroke. Not fun and I know to drink a lot of water but Gatorade is needed in this heat.
