I was fortunate enough to hear Howard give a 90 minute talk about his first trip around the Cape in a sailing canoe.  Most folks, including me, were in awe of how he prepared for this and the challenges he faced. 

Things like he knew his hands had to be up for extreme cold and still function, so each evening, while reading, he would keep one hand immersed in ice water, then switch hands.  Or sailing on San Francisco bay in winter.  He wore a diving mask and sported a full beard--ICE had covered his beard!

The whole talk, which included pictures, my wife just sat there shaking her head--she couldn't believe what he was doing...............
