Sastrugi

Hi All,
I've seen a 23D in Greece, that's on the hard (under a canvas cover). She's been sitting there for a few years on a trailer. According to the owner the engine has been removed and is in storage, condition unknown. Hull exterior seems to be in ok condition.

She's US flagged, has an MD plate and number and I could not find the hull number in the register linked in a separate section of this forum.

Owner has lost interest in sailing for personal reasons and the boatyard is owed some money (few years of dry docking and storage).

Sad to see her going to waste.

In order to assess if she's worth taking over and spending money on to rejuvenate her, I'm looking for owner experience type advice.
- Is she suitable for the Med / Greek islands and winds (strong N / NE in summer)? Like ability to close haul in seas?
- What specifically 23D related would you suggest looking at before deciding and negotiating with the boatyard and owner. She's been abandoned for a few years in sun and rain.
- What would you suggest changing, upgrading (intended use solo / couple).
- Other constructive comments and advice welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Sastrugi, as a previous owner of a 23D I have some observations.

The good:
the 23D is the best sailing of the trailerable Compacs and IMHO a fine looking boat
She can go the weather at over 100km per hour on her trailer so can explore many areas.

The not so good:
Sitting for years is not the friend of anything so you may be encountering a multitude of issues for both the boat and the engine (probably a Yanmar 1gm)
The 23D and all shoal draft keel boats do not point well
She is a very capable boat but is not designed for offshore passage making
Hutchins, the builder is now no longer in business so support and parts will be difficult.

Hope this helps and wish you luck if you decide she is worth saving. There is much support here on this forum.
