What do you think about ComPac's newest sloop in the product line?

Personally I don't care for the lines, looks stubby. Line of sight from the cockpit while underway seems very limited. Also don't like the idea of having to rearrange the inside helm to have a galley.

On the positive at least they are trying something new. We'll see how it sells and if remains in the line.

Just went to the factory yesterday and saw hull #2 under construction. I was VERY surprised at how open it was and easy to see through the cabin. It is really like a ridged Bimini. My friend has a 30' Catalina with a dodger that has less visibility. While the inside wasn't being finished yet I can't imagine it being that hard to convert the helm to the galley. Also, you can still steer the boat from the cockpit. It is not a 27 (or larger) it's only a 23. Most 23 foot boats don't even have a galley. I think it is a good design, and i'msure it was well thought out.

As far as looks go, to me it seems like a 23 with a cabin placed on top. Doesn't mean good or bad, I just see the 23 with an addition. Doesn't really have it's own identity...yet. I feel like I am still too young to have a pilot house, but I could see taking one to the Bahamas for an extended cruise though!

For now, I'll stick with my 19,

It seems to be very well thought out but I do agree with Bill: Visability from the cockpit is extremely limited and that would bug the hell out of me. I like to see where I'm going. But I guess you could get used to it. I wouldn't like it in a crowded anchorage.
I'm assuming there is standing headroom although no specific mention of it is made.
I always thought a 25 hull would have made a better motorsailer but I do like this 23 pilothouse. For now, I'm sticking with my 1985 23/2..we're still in love!

I love my pilothouse...maybe 'cause I'm old and don't like crawling around down below.  Ya'll are heading that way someday  :)

Hey it's a pilothouse, you can't compare the lines with those of a sloop.  I like it as much as any pilothouse or trawler out there.  I think they have done a good job of getting a lot out of a 23' hull.  I agree with BobL, I'm fast approaching the time when I will want standing headroom somewhere and a helm station that is out of the weather.  From the pictures, looks like decent visibility from the catbird seats.

I really like the Pilothouse too.   Bob, you are one lucky devil for snapping up Hull #1.

I don't think Bob's is a Hutchins' Pilot house.

Bob, please correct me if I am wrong. but from his pictures he has the 23 port windows and the new pilot house does not. Also I remember seeing his pictures several months ago. When I went to the factory I asked who had hull #1 and Gerry said they still had it but keep it at the marina. They needed to keep it around for template purposes until they had built a few.

Unless Bob bought it (and now has two) but it is still in the possession of the factory.

In any case, Bob, I would love to come take a look at your boat. I live in Palm Harbor and would love to see it. I am in Dunedin often.

Billy and Salty:
I built my pilothouse myself four years ago.  I don't think Hutchins had any plan to build theirs until they saw pics of mine online. (just assuming that).  Gerry came by a few weeks ago and we met for the first time.  I said: "I'm waiting for my royalties."  He said: "So am I."  We both laughed and he invited me to visit the factory and see their then unfinished pilothouse.  Check out my pics on the photobucket link below.
Billy, come by anytime.  My little ship is in slip #138 on the south wall of Dunedin Marina.  I'll be out of town for a week or so, but when I get back I'll be glad to give you a personal tour and maybe a sail in the sound.

Love these Compacs

Ahh..OK  for some reason I thought Bob L had the first one.  Well, actually he did but not hull #1!

Salty;
Do you remember our conversation (on this forum) a year or two ago?  I offered to "modify" your 19 and make it a standing headroom Pilothouse 19.  :)  You respecfully declined my offer  :)
