The flange leak isn't a big deal. The fact that the main sail is "no longer serviceable" would cost you more than repairing the leak. Ebay prices almost always stay low until the last few days/minutes, then shoot higher. I honestly wouldn't want to pay more than $5,000 for that boat, there have been plenty of other 23's in better condition going for about $6,000-$7,000, and plenty for $5,000-$6,000 with no trailer.

These had trailers:

That's what I was thinking Nate.  Even other 89s without such problems have sold for under $9000. By the time you get a new sail, fix the flange, see how bad the abrasion is, put a new bottom job on it etc. this boat will be well above that price!  Besides buying a boat on ebay is not me cup of tea. I'd like to have a little more of a controlled purchasing experience. Happy Thanksgiving everybody.

Well, the 19 on ebay went for $1,185.90, which was a bit below the low end of the expected range, probably a good price for someone who is looking for a project.

Steve,

You got me excited about a cheap boat there for a second. It's up to $402 with 5 days left now. It looks in pretty rough condition, and the add mentions a soft spot on the deck. According to the statistical models I put together, if you consider that boat in sailable condition it should go for somewhere between $2,700 to $4,500. If you don't consider it in sailable condition, then the range drops to $1,500 to $3,350. To me, it looks like it is in sailable condition (has sails and rigging, no hull damage), but it's pretty boarder line, plus it doesn't come with a motor. I would guess fair value would be $1,500 to $2,500. CP19's in MUCH better condition have sold for $4,000 or less.

http://www.sailingtexas.com/scompac19s.html - $3,800
http://www.sailingtexas.com/scompac19g.html - $3,750

That www.sailingtexas.com is where I found my boat.  That is a great site.  They appear to have archived all the previous sells, and offer boats from around the country (not just Texas).  It takes a little while to get used to navigating the site, but it is worth the effort.  The 'photos' link is fantastic.

Yep,  sailingtexas is also a pretty good way to sell your boat.  I sold my Compac 16 on there a couple of years ago. http://www.sailingtexas.com/scompac16146.html

I was surprised at the low selling price for that Compac 19,  I probably should have bought it.  :-)

Well, the 19 with the soft step is back up for auction on ebay.  Other deal must have fallen through. Might go even cheaper this time.

This ------>> "10/25/07,  ComPac 16, 1986, Henderson, Minnesota $3,950, price reduced 1/29/08 to $3,750, sold 5/5/08"  is a funny looking 'chain locker' for the anchor rode. If fact I don't see it at all. What's a soft step? I don't find it in the ad.

There is a sailboat dealer right on the frontage road in Henderson when heading West on some high way. And I think I saw my first 'salty looking' Com-Pac or Cape Dory sitting on the lot as I sped by. Asking $3,950? so sold for maybe $3,000?
skip.

This was the boat:  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360213508421

Went for slightly more the second time.  I wonder why all the wood inside was painted white . . .

Looking at the pics, she looks a bit unloved. A red rudder? Reminds me of a song,
"Red Sails In The Sunset..."
So It's plenty bright down below having been painted white?
skip.
