Fenders on a Legacy

Mister Bee

Can anyone give me a suggestion for hanging fenders on a Legacy. It seems inadvisable to use the backrest/lifeline----too much movement. I'm thinking in terms of three 6 inch fenders.

Greetings Mr. Bee

On my 16 I use two fenders. My front one I hang from the shroud chain plate. This fender is fitted with a snap hook on the line so I can mount or dismount it quickly. My aft fender I can hang from the aft cleat.

I don't use a third fender because I would have to hang it so far forward that it would never come into contact with dock or another boat due to curvature of hull.

Hopefully a Legacy owner will respond to your post and can give you some first hand advise. Site will probably be slow this weekend due to everyone sailing.

I think your right about the life line situation. I've seen others do that and just never seemed good.

Good Sailing

Mr. Bee

I just read your post under Legacy group so offer an additional congratulations on your new boat.

As to fender locations some more on why I don't use a third fender forward of shroud or side stay.  I try to locate my fenders at points of greatest beam or boat width as this is where boat comes into contact with dock or other boat if you raft up with other boats.

If you are afraid you may hit dock with forward part of boat when docking I would suggest using a larger fender there and you will probably have to fix it to your bow pulpit stanchion at deck level.  In this case I would also rig it with a quick connecting clip as you will want to unhook and store fenders out of the way when sailing.

Again congrats. and good sailing

Thanks, Melvin. I like the idea of the snap hook.

On my Com-Pac 19 skip uses just one big fat fender that is tied bow stern'wise. Knots few inches from each end of the fender keep the fender from moving 'on down the line' and the line at both ends is long enough to tie around the staunchions.
The fender is positioned at the widest point of the hull and the boat rides just fine with bow, stern, and two spring lines as a perminate collection of dock lines that were at one time my headsail sheet lines from Com-Pac before I replaced them.. skip.

Mister Bee

Thanks, Skip. That's an interesting idea. I 'm wondering if it might work with my three 6 inch fenders attached vertically on one line, stringer-fashion, using your idea of one line.

Mr Bee -

I've just taken delivery of my Legacy, so I can't tell you (yet) from experience.  My prior boat was a Cape Dory 28 with very different characteristics.  But based on my first look, I would think Melvin is right - you could use the shroud chain plate as your best mid-point location.  That's the point of greatest beam.

Best position aft might be the bottom of the forward brace of the boom gallows rather than the cleat (given the location of cleat on the Legacy mid-way up boom gallows and perhaps too far aft to do much good).  If you want to go forward of chain plate for a third perhaps the rear brace of the bow pulpit.  It extends pretty far aft on a Legacy and might do some good in that position.

Let us know if you have any better ideas after trying alternatives.

Take care,

Eric

With the fender knotted in place on the line both ends of the line that run through the horizontal fender could be tied to the same stanchion. Like a ladies halter top tied behind her neck. He he he he he skip.
