Thank you Greg for providing clarification and a voice of reason and common sense. Yes, it was just an account of an event out on the water. And beer and salt water seem to go so well together, eh?
One exception, Greg: You'll find Gosslings Black Seal rum on board my vessel. Never consumed while sailing or if I plan to sail but a Dark and Stormy is great while anchored overnight. Want one?
Bob23...sober!
(ps: Yes, Joseph, Tilley's do come with fore and aft chin straps and like a pfd, they should be used. I always fasten mine after having my first Tilley fly off, which I rescued. I'm considering putting some foam in mine so it floats. Yes, they float for a while but will sink given enough time.)

Dark n Stormy? No thanks...I like it neat!

Greg:
Boy, are you gonna get some feedback around here for that photo! You ain't even wearing a pfd!!!

David:
Good word! We have nothing to fear but fear itself. And this "don't do this, don't do that" mentality is just fear inducing bs. My son has always had an adventurous spirit. We noticed it right from the start. (I can only imagine where he got that from). Anyway, my wife's approach was to try to get him to stop these expressions of his madness. Like jumping off the house because he wanted to be a stunt man. Or climbing to the top, yes the very top of the tree and swinging it back and forth wildly. (Remember Robert Frost's "A Swinger of Birches"? Of jumping BMX bikes and flying through the air with me lying on the ground taking photos.
You could never stop this kid who is now 27. My approach was this: Think about what you are about to do. Make sure you don't do anything that can kill you because not everyone makes it through in one piece. Use some reasonable caution but don't let the inner drive for life be squelched by some nanny-maker.
A great book is "Wild at Heart" by John Eldredge. Check it out.

And another thing:
Recent medical studies have shown, and I'm sure that you all being well  informed, that an occasional beer is actually good for your heart. This information came to me from a customer who is a beer and cigar connoisseur. I myself don't really like cigars but his smelled really good. He knew what to buy. When he found out the medical benefits of an occasional beer, he was elated! Imagine, something fun and enjoyable that is actually good for you! Who woulda thunk it?
Here in NJ our state motto is "Liberty and Prosperity", but the lawmakers must not have read that one because everything they do is more towards "Slavery and Poverty". Here in the Garden State, the marine police can pull you over and give you a Breathalyzer test to see if you been a-drinkin. ( But officer, theres no shoulder on the bay...where do I park?) Yeah, they can do that but, shoot- what harm is a sailor gonna do with a 23 foot boat going at 5 knots while drinking a beer an hour? Gotta stay hydrated, you know.  The law was probably meant for the cigarette boaters and jet skiers. I'll stop now. Maybe "Slavery and Poverty" should be our national motto...were going that way but here and now is not the time and place.
Now the issue here on this thread that everyone seems to have missed is this: What kind of beer is best to drink while sailing? I think it's firmly established that beer and sailing belong together just as wind and sails belong together. Perhaps if this isn't your observation, you are just as boring off the water as on!  I just didn't say that, did I?!!
I personally like an affordable beer while out on the water. The SOL from Mexico is nice and we always try to have fresh lime...we ain't destitute yet. On land, I'll take a Guinness and a cheeseburger any day. I don't lean toward gotta-stick-your-pinky-out restaurants. Flying Fish beers, which by the way are brewed right here in good old NJ are wonderful. Killian's Red, Yenglings, Murphys, you get the idea. Anything but Bud and light beers. Now if you like Bud and/or light beers, more power to ya. I don't intentionally step on toes, just offering my humble opinion. We're all  on this planet together so let's try to behave.
To sum it up, brothers and sisters, sail a Compac, enjoy it and keep some beer in the cooler if you wish. If you choose not to, don't look down your over-sober nose at me for having a cold one with friends. Life is too short to own an ugly boat, drink cheap beer and wine, or complain about petty stuff.
For the record, I am, repeat, AM against drunk or impaired driving. If out to dinner, and I've imbibed a bit too much, my wife, more of a teetotaller than myself, will drive home. I don't enjoy getting blind drunk anymore...fun (I guess) while you are young but I just don't enjoy it anymore. Except if it's Lemoncello!

SOL is great.  Lately its been "Land Shark" for me.  Gotta have a cold brew and gotta know when enough is enough.
BOB23 FOR PRESIDENT !

Yipe!  What's with all the defensiveness?  It was just a question!  It happens I don't drink.  I get a lot of flack about it.  My own business.  My own choice.  I leave you to yours.  All I ask is moderation.  If you get  drunk, please let someone else take the helm.  To each their own.  Enjoy the water, and stay safe!

Bob23

Amen, Ka8uet, amen. I couldn't agree more.

Ka8, bob looks like these two threads are talking the same talk. We all agree! (see my comments on beer and sailing thread)
