Mystery Boat Revealed!

I bought a solid little daysailer this past week and it was quite a chore to figure out what it was...  Finally, I discovered that I had one of the elusive Com-Pac 14's!

It's a bit dirty and needs some TLC but she seems sound and I'm looking forward to getting her back on the water.  Unfortunately, the sails have been lost.  With only 31 ever constructed, I doubt that I'm going to find original sails but figure that used sails from a similar hull should work.  I think that Flying Junior sails might suit but an FJ mainsail foot may be too long for the CP14 boom...

Anyone have info on the original CP14 sail dimensions for comparison?

I posted a couple pictures in the photos section... hopefully I can ad a few of her sailing before too long...

I got sails!  Or at least I will have them in 4-6 weeks.  By odd coincidence, it turns out that Com-Pac's OEM sailmaker is right here in Charleston, SC.  It took him a few days but he managed to dig out an old file with all of the original sail specs for the CP-14.  

It's a small little world!

FYI - I did finally get my sails and get the old CP-14 underway again.  I only got to sail her a couple times this summer but she sails great.  I only wish that I had instructed my sailmaker to add a couple of reef points since she's a bit over-canvased when the wind gets blowing.  

There's a couple new pics of my hull rigged in the photos section.  I still haven't gotten any underway photos but soon!

Hey Shawn,

The sails look great.    I wouldn't say she is over-canvased for her lines, for she's made for speed.  Much like my old Demon, the CP-14 is a planning hull made for racing.  Unlike the bigger CP-16 and up which are displacement hulls, your CP-14 will actually lift above the breaking bow wave and skim along the surface when the wind blows.  Her hull is relatively flat so there is less resistance.  You and your crew are the ballast and will have to shift to the gunnels in a stiff breeze. Your boat will sail faster and plane if you can keep her level.  Of course there is always a point when there is too much wind for any boat!

Oh, don't get me wrong... I'm plenty familiar with planing hulls.  I've just outgrown the need to go like a bat out of hell all the time...  Most days, I'm perfectly content to tie in a reef and cruise along peacefully flat and at a pace that won't overturn my beverage...  

Of course, it's still nice to have the option to kick it up a notch when the mood takes you in which case it's time to say "Brace youself Bridget, we're in for heavy seas!"

I fully understand, having been there myself.  In any case your boat is good looking and appears in great shape. With the new set of sails you'll be able to kick it up or bobble along, whichever way the wind blows.

Well, I sold my mysterious CP-14 about a month back to a nice fellow with two young boys.  I hadn't been sailing her much and figured that she'd be happier with a couple of young skippers who would give her more of a workout...  I hope she continues to sail the seas for many more years to come.
