Hi Bob
Would be interested if you bought kit or just the plans for your woodenboat shellback dink. If you bought plans did they include full size patterns or just lines and you transfered the lines to plywood.
Thanks
Melvin

Hi Melvin,

I purchased the book and the plans.

The plans comes with some of the parts full size but not the
hull of the boat. It comes with a table of lofting figures which are really
just x/y positions in a plane.

I marked out the template onto cardboard thinking that would be stiff. I would recommend laying out a large table or floor, taping a large piece of paper to the floor and build the template from there.

Another hint is to get a long piece (8')  of 1/4 round, about 1/4" from center to round... This will give  you the ability to put a smooth spline through the points...

As I said, I am thinking of building 1/4" plywood templates so I can build hulls in a production mode. I would need to pay a fee to Wooden boat for each boat built but that is a good investment.

I am also interested in building the boat in fiberglass. My initial alculation would be the boat would go from 100 pounds to around 60.

good luck!

Hello

When you say thinking of making boat out of fiberglass and foam do you mean to cut panels from foam and then vacuum bag fiberglass over the panels. then assemble the panels.

Have you tried a sail one the which you have already made.  Looks like a good little fun boat.

I made the Shellback because of the cape Dory which draws 5+ feet and the northeast is rocky as can be.

Up here, I will pull the shellback because a couple of areas I want to visit have a minimal beach and heavy rocks. This place is an island off Marblehead mass that used to have a functioning golf course. The Goft course is shut down and I am told it is a lovely place for lunch.

I have moored in the little bay and had lunch there and it is very nice...

not sure what the ticks will be like on the island... we seem to have an explosion this year of the little buggers...

Have a great day

Hi - I put my completed dingy in the water today, after playing around with it I put it on my boat and wawla! It fits! (now I just have to see if it sails well)

What about a sit on top kayak?  Anyone have experience using one?

Bob Condon

The only problem with a Kayak is getting equipment to the boat. If you have more than one person, it is hard to go ashore...
