Well, it leaked!

So I guess I knew this would happen someday but I opened the hatch and saw and felt a damp port side cushion.  I think I may have found the problem and here is my guess:  I knew that after weeks of keeping it on the trailer waiting for the water to come up that it only leaked in one spot.  That was the starboard side round thing near the back on the bench seat.  I dont know what these are called.  They screw off so you can grab stuff under the seats?  (1988 Compac II)  Anyway this didnt bother me because the water would collect in a tupperware box the P.O had stuffed way down the berth.  In this box he had odds and ends on both sides.  Well my guess is water got too high in this box, when the boat was tied to the dock last week and it rained every day, then sloshed around until some came out and spilled/collected in the very back.  When I forced myself face first into the very back of the berth, I noticed the water had really pooled up back here and when the boat rocked water spilled over the little lip that stops the cushion from being pushed all the way back and this soaked the cushion.  (and my chest :? ).  Now it's only like a gallon or two of water but it looks like I've got to stop this leak.  The boat will be left outside all season tied to the dock.

Has anyone had leaks here and found a good way to stop it?  I'm thinking I'll just try thread tape but that prob.  won't work?  What are those screw off holes called anyhow?
Thanks!!

A common leak is around the scuppers where they exit the transom. The PVC tube is caulked and the caulk can dry out and leak.

Ok that may my case too.  When I managed to get my face back there on a sunny day you could see lighter areas where the sun came through more than other areas.  I saw that calk you were talking about.  My guess was to have someone hose it down on another sunny day while I was jammed way back there to see if I could spot a leak? :?:

That's the way several have discovered the leak.

I'm also glad my older 16 has a lazarette hatch instead of the fuel tank locker and the two round access ports. I don't have to dive head first down the quarterberth to get to the transom.

On the topic of leaks, does anyone know how to cure a leak around the plug in the forward hatch. This plug comes out on my 19 similiar to the 16 so one can insert a flexible cowl vent. I did take out the plug and cleaned it and its hatch flange. Thanks, Steve   :?:

Steve,

Mine leaked and I called Com-Pac. They no longer used that brand and sent me what they were then using (I bought it!) along with an HDPE adapter ring because the new style was a different size. The main difference is the flange that holds the vent is an upward mushroom that the vent fits over rather than goes down in. The plug screws in place rather than a flush fit. It does require careful caulking and would alter your hatch profile more than it does my foredeck, but I've been very happy with it.

Thanks Craig, I'll give Hutchin's another call. The first time I called they told me to remove and reset the vent flange but in reality it was leaking through the plug not around the flange. Steve  :)

Craig

Steve,

Mine leaked around the plug because the first I thing I did when I go the boat home was break it trying to get it out. Dummy me tried to pry it up from the outside rather than push it up from inside.  Turned out for the best because I really like what I've got now.
