CP16 pointing (hard numbers)?

I've always read that cp16 doesn't point 'well'. The later model with bowspirt, centerboard, foiled rudder, etc were all suposed to help.
2 Lobsters is a /I with non of the above. Playing on the lake last night and watching the compass on a beat, it appears the best I was able to do was about 60deg off the wind. I'm just curious if that sounds about right? I've seen comments by others that add or make a foiled rudder, that it improves pointing, as does adding the bowspirit. Does anyone have numbers of how many degrees it's helped?
We're never really in a hurry to get anywhere, I'm just trying to judge the $ for upgrades vrs point/deg improvment.

Sixty degrees off the wind sounds about right.  My CP16 has the foiled rudder but no bowsprit or centerboard.  I found a noticeable difference in pointing and ease of tacking with the foiled rudder, but it is no magic bullet.  From my GPS I've seen that I can get closer than sixty degrees (50 to 55) off the wind with the foiled rudder, but getting to my destination is faster if I fall off to about sixty.  The boat tends to crabwalk less and the headway is around a knot faster.  (That's sailing with main and 110% jib.  You might do a little better with a genoa).   Also I've noticed that keeping the heeling to 15 degrees or less when close-hauled will maximize the ability to point upwind.
The foiled rudder makes a definite improvement.  If you do a search on the CYOA site for idasailor rudder, you'll find lots of testimony by other sailors about the value of performance vs. damage to the wallet.  Figuring out how to make the most of my CP16 is almost as fun as sailing.  Hope you find what you need.

Thanks Jeff, that's what I was looking for. Yeah, I've searched here, and I think I've been thru the CP16 subforum and read every post. Not to mention searching and reading the yahoo group archives. Yes, the 'putzing' is almost as fun as sailing, "2 Lobsters" has come along ways in the past year and I still have lots left to do to increase the comfort and performance. One day/project at a time :)

Jeff and Team S,
I have a Cp-16 and just finished making my own NACA 0014 foiled rudder,  Idasailor uses 0012.
Don't have numbers, but I can say that the foil rudder does indeed make a difference in sail pointing and ease of tacking.  Love it and well worth the improvement.

We had Summer Escape out this afternoon, evening and even though the wind keep shifting around we were able to point very well.  Then I unfurled the 155 Genoa and took off and we did even better.

This is only the second time out with the new rudder and we like it a lot.
Do it.

Happy sailing

Doug, I've looked at your pics and the other thread on your foiled rudder. I've been considering trying the same thing. If you have any drawings or measurements you used, I'm all ears.

Paul

Yes, Doug, I am curious how much longer your rudder is compared to the idasailor rudder as well as the location of the leading edge from the pivot point.  One of the perks of the idasailor rudder is this quality.  The helm feels more balanced with the leading edge a little more forward than the original rudder.  Looking forward to your reply.

Capt Paul and Team S,

Team S, I  hope I answered you through your email .address.  Good karma

Capt Paul,  The leading edge has been increase by one (1) inch.. I used rock maple wood as the filler.... the NACA 0014 is 14 inches wide.... I lopped off the trailing one inch for strength and you really don't want it coming to a point anyway.    Mine is exactly 13 inches wide.  22 inches long.
You can see the building of it on my website at www. martindalewoodworking.com
Scroll down to the Com-Pac 16 tab and double click on it.   Then head down towards the bottom of that page to see the building of my foil rudder.

Any help I can provide just ask , that is why I am here.   Enjoy.  More Good Karma.
Happy sailing and we are out the door to go do just that.
