Does anyone have plans for a mast crutch for a CP 16?

I'm a newbie to CPYOA, picking up my new (1984) 16 next week and I know that the owner does not currently have a mast crutch so I need to build/acquire one.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

Chris:

I made a very simple mast crutch out of 2 x 4's and a 3 inch hinge.  I cut the 2 x 4's into two equal lengths  and mounted the hinge at the end of both (sort of like a sandwich board).  I screwed an extra 2 x 4 block on each board on the same end where the hinge is so that when the hinge is open there is a wider place for the mast to rest.  All I do for the crutch is I put the ends of the boards on the seat just inside the coamings and rest the mast on the top where the boards are hinged and blocked.  I lash the whole thing down tying the line off on the aft cleats.  It's simple, easy, and inexpensive.  Works just fine for me.

CHRIS,

GO TO CPYOA HOMEPAGE.  CPYOA LINKS, THEN ON COMPAC OWNERS SIGHT, GRACE PERIOD. ON THIS SIGHT TO MODIFICATIONS & UPGRADES.  HERE IS A  MAST CRUTCH ATTACHED TO THE UPPER SECTION OF THE RUDDER ASSEMBLY MADE OF 1X4'S.  I AM THINKING ABOUT MAKING ONE SIMILAR, BUT WITH SCHED 40 PVC ATTACHED TO THE 1X4.  THERE WILL BE TWO SIZES OF PVC, ONE INSIDE THE OTHER SO I CAN RAISE IT HIGHER WHEN STEPPING MAST.  THE 1X4'S ARE A REATIVE SIMPLE SET-UP & I MAY JUST STICK WITH THAT. WE'LL SEE.  THERE ARE MANY OTHER IDEAS ON THE GRACE PERIOD WEB SIGHT THAT MAY BE USEFUL TO YOU.  GOOD LUCK & HAVE FUN.

I built a simple "crutch" with a piece of 2x 6 lumber that fastens to the motor mount wood piece with two bolts and wing nuts. The Crutch has two side pieces of wood trim to " capture "  the end of mast. The height is set so the middle of mast is supported by the sliding hatch lip. The foot end of the mast is tied to the top of the bow rail. I use multiple shock cords to tie with and rug pieces to protect mast.
Note: to save launch time the side shrouds are kept attached to the chain plates  (tied back)  and at the ramp I raise mast and attach front stay. (These are already preadjusted at the beginning of the season).
