Hello!

Just wanted to say hello...newbie here on an '82 C16, named Salty Parrot, from the Columbus Ohio area.  She sails on Hoover Reservoir and Alum Creek now and is in excellent condition!!!.
So the purchase details:  $2300 with '99 Johnson 4hp/2str. outboard, original sails, everything in order and close to stock. She came with teak side rails with brass risers and cockpit halyards added and has needed minor restoration items only thus far. Doesn't appear to have leaked around usual cranky weak spots, either. The boat was kept on Magic tilt trailer all it's life, and minimal to restore. For first generation boat, it's pretty nice!

I'm not a pure neophyte to sailing, but certainly nowhere near the experience many of you surely have had.  I've really enjoyed the knowledge learned on this site so far and hope to learn much more as well contribute to the "family" too.

Bought her in June and have sailed about 15 times since acquiring, so I'm getting the hang of it. Very easy to boat to sail, and since adding the Ida Kick-Up Foiled Rudder assembly, steering/response is much improved and just more fun to sail overall. Plus the rudder no longer gets stuck in an up position when gunkholing.  In the future, I'll bend a storm jib and genoa, and likely need reef points--since there aren't any!!!

Also added a jib downhaul, add'l docking cleats, made a food/drink tray for lunchtime, new trailer lights and tires, and new lines where needed.

So thanks for listening...see you all on the forum and hopefully sometime in the water!

Welcome to the COM-PAC family. The 16 is a fun and forgiving boat to sail.    HAPPY SAILING      BILL

looks like we will have a lot in common. hope to share more when i can get out next spring. if you ever get to southern illinois look me up and we will sail carlyle lake.

Never sailed a 16 but I'd like to. I did have a chance to crew with Kevin on his 19 before he sold her and, what a boat! Due to the semi-hard chines, she didn't have the same amount of initial heel that the 23 does. Don't matter, after the 23 heels some, that 1300 lb. keel takes over.
I would imagine the 16 is like the baby sister to the 23. Yes??

Welcome-

Sounds like you got a good deal on a nice boat, love the name.  At some point we need to have a midwest Compac rendezvous perhaps spend a week sailing around the Apostle Islands or something like that . . .

Salty19

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

A midwest rendezvous sounds really fun once the weather clears.

I just completed a quasi-rebuild of the 4HP Johnson outboard just to get it back to "known" condition. I figured the $100 or so of parts was probably worth it to know that the maintenance is up to date. Removed carbon on head/exhaust ports, new plugs, carb cleaning/rebuild, grease job, fuel lines/fuel pump rebuild, new gaskets. It fired right up too :)  OK, I admit I had a fuel leak that took 5 mins to fix--but still I was happy that it actually idled better than before. The idle was not very consistent prior to cleaning the carb, so I think it did a world of good.  I replaced the main "jet", float, fuel inlet needle, adjusted float and sprayed carb cleaner/compressed air down the cavities.  Time will tell if it has more power for making headway to the dock when a storm is approaching.

Bob--I can't answer your question about the 23 vs.16.   I will say that the 16 feels much bigger in terms of stability than it really is.  Walking around on it while sailing or at anchor is not uncomfortable. I've noticed that other sailboats on the water (larger than the C16) seem to heel more than I am given the same tack, which tells me the 41% ballast ratio on the C16 is likely doing it's job well.

Again, thank you for the welcome!!!
