Dear Administrator,

I'm wondering how I can get upgraded from "swabbie" to something a bit more prestigious. I am an Annapolis grad, was a qualified Officer of the Deck on an AEGIS cruiser, and ended my naval career as the Navigator on two different nuclear aircraft carriers. Being called a "swabbie" especially this late in life, is just a bit hard for my ego to absorb when seeing my name posted.  Is there any way that I can move up the Com-Pac food chain?

Cheers,
Keith

Hey Kieth,

I'm not an admin, but I think I can answer your question.  The "rank" is built into the software and is based upon your activity, i.e., number of posts.  It is certainly done in jest and for the fun of it.  As an example, I was a "deck grunge scrubber" on another sailboat related forum.  Prior to that I was a "bottom paint scrubber."  Off the top of my head, I can't think what my rank is on that site at the moment.

Anyway, done for the fun of it.  (Hint: multiples of ten, or so.)

Also, notice the "KARma".  Good fun there, too.

Hey Guys,
You have to wear each title with honor.  I miss the sawbbie days frankly.  Those were good days.  Here at the forum each topic was new and exciting.  We were all discovering our 20 year old boats together for the first time.
But what I notice now is that new members join and have the same fresh excitement about the doohickey rod, quigley bolt, or dressing up the cabin.  One could look back deep in the old threads and find some of this but I like that some of the old questions get asked and new answers are given.
You will find three groups here.  The purists with the correct and final answers.  The goof balls telling funny stories and the visitors who read but never post.  All good and valuable.
Few take my notions as gospel, few laugh at my silliness, but it doesn't deter me.
So enjoy the early days, the getting to know each other time, and chiming in on things you know a lot about or little about.
Very easy for people to write something, get no response and get their feelings hurt.
If you notice someone asking a question, or putting forward an idea or story and notice no-one responding it is your sworn duty to respond and move the thread forward.
That's how you earn rank.

Keith -

First: Thank you very much for your service to our Nation! I do appreciate it!

You obviously have more sea time than probably the rest of us - and maybe all of us put together. :)

The 'swabbie' designation goes away with your 10th post here on the board, then you get to be a 'grinder' for a bit, and so on. It's all done in fun.

If there was a way for me to change the title only for you, I would do it. However, the permissions on that part of the software aren't fine grained enough for me to do so.

Yet with just 3 more posts, you can leave the title of 'swabbie' behind forever! :D I hope that's OK now that you have some explanation. :)

Last - All that said, if you can get me a MK 15 MOD 2 Vulcan CIWS to mount on my own boat (for repelling powerboats), I will make you the highest level poster immediately. :D :D :D
My other car is a sailboat.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement. I am totally enjoying visiting the site on pretty much a daily basis. It has been almost thirty years since I've owned a boat so it is fun getting back into it. The Com-Pac 16 is a lot tamer than the 16 foot Hobie that I owned out in San Diego, but I guess it is supposed to be that way.  My goal is to get this one all fixed up this winter and maybe in the spring move up to something I can trailer and spend a few night on the Chesapeake. Meanwhile, I will enjoy learning about Com-Pacs and the tricks of the trade to enjoy the one I have.

Speaking as a Graduate ('73) of THE NY Maritime College, too bad about graduating from Annapolis ;>)    I am one of the lurkers here.  I was away from sailing boats for many years till a neighbor gave me a sunfish.  Next thing I know I've got a 19/II.  Love it.  I may be a grinder now, or foredeck crew - can't remember.

Welcome aboard Swabbie!
