Thousands of Com-Pacs sunk or burned!

Tragedy Strikes Com-Pac Fleet

Thousands of Com-Pacs have either sunk, burned or been turned into chicken coops across the country.  This according to a comparison of Com-Pacs having been built vs. those registered on the Com-Pac Registry.

This is the conclusion arrived at by Harold Thompson of Salt Flats Utah, "Its the only logical explanantion as far as I can tell.  You got some 5000 boats built and only 30 registered as floating, must be these boats are apt to sink."  Harold when pressed explained, "its the holes in the bottom I reckon, or the batteries run dead."

Other theories abound, Hurricane Katrina, Global warming or a sinister marketing ploy on the part of Catalina to sell more boats.

Even some members of the Com-Pac association who claim to have boats have been found to clip photos from magazines to post in the gallery.  "That's right", says Captain Jib, "of the 740 association members there seem to be just some thirty boats."  Tales of sailing in days gone past keeps the site lively, mostly members work on the trailers."

If you haven't posted yet to the registry, C'mon.

And as another adder to the head-count, here is a picture of a CP-19 (named: Champagne) that we stumbled across in the Saint Petersburg Municipal Marina as we were walking back from the Strictly Sail boat show last Sunday. Don't know how to contact the owner though, no trespassing signs were posted all over the place and it was behind a BIG fence. I took this image by positioning the camera lens through the openings in the chain link fence.

It is very sad to see, but I know of at least three 16s and a 23 sitting in a local storage yard. The owners are now elderly and don't sail any longer but they don't want to give up their boats. (I can understand that). My C19 hull # 1  sat in a storage yard for several years before I found her.

I know of an early 16 that had a blown out keel so the owner cut out the old keel ,and is experimenting with completely different types of keel designs. These boats have a certain likeability even appreciated by non boaters. I suspect, there are many Compacs in back yards and storage yards waiting to be discovered and sailed by a new generation of sailors.

Good sailing

At least one CP 23 sits on a honduranian stack of wood pallets in Roatan ( bay islands Central America )...it is abandonned , dirty , but look very sailable...I have been working there 3 month a year for last 3 years and the boat is moved now and then by a crane to make moore room for mountains of agregates...I have gone to question the staff frm the local office of that construction material yard who say she belongs to a Mr Jackson ( this family name relates to the tycoons frm the bay islands )
I do not have pictures , sorry !

We just bought our 1983 ComPac 16 (right before Memorial Day).

It had only been sailed a handful of times and had been garage stored for the last 24 years.  He had bought it (brand new) before he retired and never had anyone to sail with (his wife didn't like the water).  He said that he didn't want to get rid of it because he "just liked to look at it".

Great for me because I got a showroom new boat.    We live between Detroit and Port Huron (Michigan) so we're looking forward to Lake Huron sailing as well as Lake St. Clair sailing!!!

What a gem of a boat  we've gotten!!!

Wow! what a find!... They're out there, but yours sounds unbelievable.
I helped a friend of mine find his "dreamboat" last month.  His name is Al and he will be joining shortly.
He has had many boats and lost everything (Home, office, warehouse full of A/V gear, etc.) in Katrina.
I had been taking him out for "sailing therapy" and he really liked the 16... (he had been planning on something bigger like his previous boats)... The big question is "how much time do you really spend in the cabin?" and "how often do you have a big group to take sailing?"

We had almost gotten a couple of other boats when I came across this find.  I had been looking for one with a bow sprit, and jenoa tracks... Al has already ordered his Ida Foiled Rudder and he will be picking up his boat in Colorado next month (where it has been sailing in "bottled drinking water" or stored for the winter)... it is a beauty... you are truly lucky to have found yours...

Congrats and HAVE FUN!!!
