Hi all,

I've been browsing this forum quite often in the past few weeks and am now at a point where I should probably introduce myself.

I bought my first sailboat ever in Spring 2006, an O'Day Javelin with some hull damage on a rusty trailer. It served me well as I learned to sail in the general direction I wanted to go with it, and eventually learned how not to capsize it when the winds picked up. My wife wasn't too keen on it, however, as it was pretty dicey in anything more than 10 mph winds, at least with an amateur like myself at the helm.

After we had the chance to sail with some friends who had a larger boat, she admitted to me that if we had something more stable so she could relax and enjoy the ride, rather than constantly worry about where to distribute her weight, she would actually enjoy sailing with me.

Thus began the search. I was drawn to the CP-16 largely from reading this forum because it seems stable, big enough for us, and yet would still fit in our garage. When we finally found one in good shape, at a fair price, and just over in Milwaukee, we had the magic combination we were waiting for. Lucky for us, the Javelin sold quickly on Craigslist, so we suddenly had room in the garage for a new boat.

So we made an offer earlier this week and we're both taking a vacation day and picking it up tomorrow. It's a '75 in remarkably good shape. We can't wait to get it out on Lake Mendota over our three-day weekend.

Thanks to everyone on this forum who helped us decide that this would be the perfect boat for us.

Welcome Troy,

You have more experience than me if you sailed last summer.  As you get accustom to your 16 this site will be great help in answering your questions.  I look forward to hearing how it goes.  My wife has been with me a few times and she is getting more comfitable but will probably never be a sailor.  She thinks she would like the 19 better.  Others have told me that most wives never really get comfitable until the boats are in the 30 foot range.  All of that is out of my league.  Enjoy the 16 and remember to keep the wife comfitable, she deserves it.

Troy,

Welcome to the forum!  Great decision.  What good luck!  Be sure to check the serial number on the stern, starboard side.  Just curious, because '75 is pretty early.  There's a registry on the forum, too.

Best wishes and fair winds,

Paul

Add my welcome to the forum also.  We and our CP-16 hull number 1994 and year 1983 named SUMMER ESCAPE was rescued from a farm field up by Watertown, WI after 5 or 6 years in the field.  New sails and alot of work, she is sailing again.  We are from Burlington, WI and sail all over the state.
Every weekend we try a different lake.  Next weekend Kegonsa Lake...we hope..State Fair time also...sooooooo we will try.
Welcome and if you want to get together somewhere sometime, email me.

Welcome neighbor to the south!

I have CP-19 #22 on Lost Lake (just west of Beaver Dam). I work in Madison (when I go to the office).

I have only had my boat out twice so far, both times were expensive, but I am not discouraged! I want to get out more but with three kids and two garages full of toys, it's hard to do.

We are planning a trip to Sturgeon Bay this fall hopefully to meet CP owners up there, and would like to sail the Apostle Islands next spring.

Thanks for all the responses. I wasn't aware there were so many Compac sailors in Wisconsin.

Turned out the boat we bought was a '77, not a '75. I'll add it to the registry once we decide on a name for it.

Due to lack of wind, then rainfall, and then some minor mechanical problems with the trailer winch, I didn't get a first sail on our new boat until yesterday.

But yesterday was a blast! We didn't have a ton of wind -- 7-8 mph at best and mostly 5 or so, but we made it all over the lake. I brought my handheld GPS on board for the first time. I was always afraid to do that on the Javelin for fear of it getting wet. At one point on a reach in good wind, the GPS reported we were hitting 5.8 mph. I thought that was respectable. I didn't really see the issue with pointing on this boat. I have the early model without the swing keel and even so, felt I could sail it respectably close to the wind. Perhaps not tight enough to hit a race marker, but certainly tight enough to get back to the dock when I want to.

Mostly, I loved the stability of the boat and the welcome absence of the swing keel clanking around during low winds. I think we're going to have a lot of fun with it.

As it happens to be me and two other Com-Pac 19 owners, and three C-P 16 boats are floating around. Two 27's and a 25/23? So here in Sturgeon Bay we are. Driving up? Lets go sailing.  will send private message with particulars. skip.

Troy:
Glad to hear of your success.  I think you hit the nail on the head regarding performance;  not a racer, but a respectable boat.

Fair winds,

Paul

Ya Skip, I'm heading your way soon too. I am in Traverse City as I write this, and I would love to sail from Sturgeon Bay to here, but that must be 100 miles!

Nonetheless, a weekend in SB is on the agenda for this fall. I'll write you when I know the date!
