Hello everyone, I am the proud new owner of a Com-Pac 16 and was wondering if I can replace the 8 inch tires that came on the original trailer with 12 inch...we have some pretty rough boat launches around here in Wisconsin.

What do you mean, wanting to replace the 8 inch rims and tires with 12 inch rims and tires?
Well I soppose you can do that but the new rims need the same bolt pattern, clear the fender...you know all that. I won't get into that.

What really is important is the information on the sidewall of your 8 inch tires. LOAD RANGE!!
It is maybe a  'D'  or 'E' rating that will carry  'X'  pounds at  'X' pounds tire inflation.

I inflate my 'D's to 90 pounds for full weight carring ability as stated on the sidewall.

I like to keep my Dico tires by Dyneer Corporation nice and cool in temperature.
I use the Palmer Johnson hose and compressor from work, can't usually can't find that kind of air pressure in a gas station anymore!

So see what your capacity is and what the tire is designed for. Give them the full load in air pressure.

Calculate the boat weight, the trailer weight, the gear weight being towed and Davide by two and that ought to be less then the load rating on the each tire.

If it is less pounds then the sidewall rating then happy motoring.

And remember, Resistance squares as speed doubles!! Slow down push less air.

Oh I forgot to ask where in Wisconsin do you boat? And congrats on the C-P 16. She is fine boat and this site is the best for information about your boat. Some of these guys have dismantaled and rebuild just about everytype of Com-Pac made and have done some marvelous things in the process. skip.

Tis I Doug,
Thanks for the answers.

As to where in Wisconsin we sail...all around the SouthEastern part of the state.   Home would be Burlington.  Great site and I am sure I will be asking more questions as this CP16 has been parked in a field for about 5 years and neglected... I really like the CP 16 and will take good care of it once it gets home to my driveway...  it also has a bent trailer tongue.  The boat was up to the axle in mud...tires were dry rotted both and spare.  That is why the question on tires.... if I had to replace them. Then why not go bigger.?

Thanks all.

Doug142:

Hello and welcome to the forum.  Glad to hear of another CP-16 rescued.

There's lots of info on this site.  You'll have fun just catching up on some topics, I'm sure.  Here's a link that may help with the tire issue:  tires

Hope this helps.  Again, welcome.

I recently replaced my 8" to 12", but then I moved my axel fom a axel under spring to axel over spring this brought the trailer back to it's original ride heigth. This greatley improved the handeling of the trailer.                                                                                      SAVE THE COM-PAC'S           BILL

I don't know how Paul does it but he came up with a whole pile of good information.
about tires...

As for those larger radials please note that the LOAD RANGE was around 700 pounds, that is all!

So I just went out and looked at my trailer tires. My Performance Trailer designed for a Com-Pac 19 rolls on...

20.5  [vertical] x 8.0 [rim] x 10 [wide]. Non-radial, so that makes them 'belted'.
Load Range E
Tread is 4 ply/sidewall is 2 ply nylon
Load is 1535 pounds at 90 psig.

So the Com-Pac 19 weighs in at 2000 pounds.
The trailer is around 600 pounds
My gear is 275 pounds.
______________________
2875 pounds divided by two = 1438 pounds per each tire that is designed for 1535. So I'm very good.

Let them puppy's spin! Lube up the bearings after as that trailer sat for five years sinking into the quagmire, who knows how much water is in the race and bearings.

As on my car, it is fitted with... 225-55 R-18 which means tread width is 225 millimeters wide, 55% of the tread equals the sidewall height, R is radial, and the rim is 18 inch.  Load range [st'd?] is 730 to 1530 pounds dependent on air pressure.

The most difficult thing about towing a Com-Pac is tongue weight. What with the bow stanchion/winch combination and the jack taking up so much tongue room it is hard to put the hull far enough forward to have enough weight on the ball hitch.
I have the extended telescoping tongue and flip~plopped the bow stanchion and jack and that allowed the Comfort and Joy to be slid forward about 6~9 inches and put a few more pounds on the ball. No fishtailing for me!. A guy could loosen up the bolts and pull the axle assembly back a bit for even more ball weight and I do like the idea of putting the axle above the spring plates to lower the chassis about 2 inches. An old hotrodder trick, to be sure!.

See where you are. skip.

Thanks.  Glad to help.  ;)

Lost Lake

Hello Burlington neighbor! I am picking up my CP19 at South Shore Yacht Club today (yes, it's right where they found the body of the missing man yesterday).

The Magic Tilt trailer I get with the boat has 15" tires on it. The fenders were cobbled up to clear the rubber. I will make those prettier, but I sure prefer a taller tire. Those little tires spin so fast they really heat up. And the E-range 8" and 10" tires cost almost the same money as a big tire.

I am dreaming of pulling up to sail the Apostle Islands, and pulling down to sail the keys, so I need good tires. The only concern I have is keeping the trailer as low as possible, which means I may need to move the spindles out and up a bit to lower the boat, but I have built several trailers in the past so I am confident I can self-perform this.

Can't wait to get my CP19 home today and really look her over good, maybe dunk her in the little lake in my back yard (it may look silly - it's just a 300 acre lake!) and give the kids a ride.

Welcome to the forum Lost Lake and congrats on the CP 19... I have to stay with the little tires for now since I ran out of money fixing/restoring Summer Escape, our CP16 which will be in the water at Browns Lake in Burlington this Saturday AM till ???  This is the first time since we rescued her from a corn field near Watertown after 5 or 6 years of sitting outside.... looks great now... new sails also.
Stop by and say Hi...
