Seeking info for weight of outboard motor

I am new at posting on this website.  I  purchased a 1986 CP-19 about a month ago and am planning on buying an outboard motor for it.  I called Hutchins Co. to find out the weight capacity that the motor mount would hold.  The answer I got was that it originally was planned for a 10 hp 2 stroke motor.  As best I can tell, that weight would be about 80 lbs.  The Yamaha 8 hp with electric start 20" shaft weighs about 110 lbs. according to the dealer I spoke with.  Would anyone know if this weight would work with the original motor mount?  Any information or suggestions would be very welcome.

Well I just bought a new Suzuki 6 for mine and it works fine. It replaced a twenty year 5 horse Suzuki two stroke. And it only weigh just over thirty pounds or so. I don't think you want too much weight back there if you don't need it.

I use an older Evinrude 6.  It weighs in at 53 pounds.  I tried a 10 hp Evinrude while my 6 was in the shop for a new water pump. It worked alright and I didn't have any problems except it was tough to pick the 10 hp motor up to put it on the mount with the boat high on the trailer. I am now happy to have the 6 back. There is an issue with the extra weight of the 10

One of the long timers at our boat yard was telling us the C 19 would just keep going faster and far exceed hull speed with a 10 hp. He told some good stories of how they could outrun afternoon thunder storms.  I don't know how true it is,but it might be interesting to give it a try

I would say the 6 hp is the better choice for the c19 .

I also agree that 6 HP is sufficient for CP19.

My Yamaha 6 (2 stroke) weighs in about 50 lbs. and has proven more than adequate for all condition.  The only time I had the motor on full throttle was motoring against 25 knts wind and 4' sea surrounded by shallows.

I also remove the outboard from the stern when trailering so lighter the better.

Thanks Kevin, Terry and Jeff.

Looks like you are in agreement about the 6 hp.  I sure wanted that electric start but they don't come in the under 8 hp. Once I get the 19 cleaned up, I'll try to get all the information re: it and the 16 on the website.  (Still need to name both of these boats.)  I have a Yamaha 2005 4 hp 4-stroke motor on the 16 but the shaft is too short for the 19.  The 16 still needs a lot more work on it as well, but I'll have to let that go for awhile or sell it.

I am a fairly new sailor and am not as knowledgeble as you old salts are.  I sail my little CP-16 on a small lake (Lake Josephine) in Sebring, FL just trying to get some experience. I found my CP-19 in Cincinnati on Ebay as I was browsing to see what was out there.  Cincy is only a short drive from here in Middletown and also from where ithe boat is now docked in Aurora, IN.  The plan is to take it to FL when we go back this fall.  This boat is really nice. and even came with the trailer.  It needs a good cleaning and I am working on that.  It didn't come with a motor though, but the price was great even without the motor.

I really enjoy reading the posts on the website.  What I really need when we go back to FL is a friend that is a sailor that can teach me more about sailing.  I am an old geezer but a fast learner.  I spent 10 years active duty in the Navy in my younger days, but serving on carriers is not much help for real sailing.  I know I'll be on here asking a lot more questions.

Thanks again.

I have been using a Johnson (same as Evinrude) 6 horse power 2 stroke on my 23/II for 12 years now, with good results.  The fuel economy is ok at about 0.45 gallons per hour, so the six gallon tank lasts over 13 hours at 4.5 knots.  The original Com-Pac owner's manual recommends  6 to 8hp for the 23, so it must be good for the 19.

When I picked up my C-P 19 the dealer [YachtWorks, Sister Bay, Wisconsin] hung a brand new Mercury 5 hp 2 stroke on the motor mount. No complaints. Great motor. What around 56 pounds?

For an exact weight just  'Goggle' then  'Immage'  the brand motor that may be of interest. skip.

I have a 6hp Tohatsu 4 stroke on my Eclipse.  It weighs 59lbs with a 25" shaft length.

That motor sounds perfect for this boat. Enjoy.

So how fast will the churn push the boat?
Or should I say how much faster does the motor push the boat vs. how fast the sails push the boat? skip.

Believe it or "knot" I have a 1987 Com-Pac 19' and have a Yamaha 8 hp High thrust 4 cycle electric start motor on my boat with the original motor mount.  I love it and it works great.  It does make a few people look twice when I over take larger boats.  I for one appreciate the extra power that is available.

One advantage not spoken about is that the extra hp allows you to pull a tube in the water behind the boat as well.  This makes it a lot of fun on the flat calm dulldrum days of summer.  While not as fast as a speed boat it is fun to pull the kids or go out there with a beer =o)

The weight is excessive and I am looking to replace the mount this fall when I pull the boat out for the season (just in case) but I have not had any issues other then lifting the motor which is heavy.  I also use a bungee cord - attaching it to the engine and rear rail - to help take some of the weight off the motor mount while the boat is moored.

The lift on the back of the transom is in the WestMarine Catolog and I believe it states that that lift is good for 25 hp. skip.
