Anyone out there have any personal experience with anti-skid surface products they have used on the deck surface of thier boat?

I have used Durabak's product on something other than a boat and the UV light killed the color pigment and it turned chalky. It seemed to hold up well as far as not peeling but looked terrible after a while.

The factory Gel-coat anti skid on my 16 is in perfect shape but have thought about changing the look and feel of it while I am completely refinishing my vessel.

So many products to look at I thought I would get "user imput" if anyone can add their experience as far as durability, ease of application and did it look good,  color retention, and did it peel on you.

   Thanks in advance. Lee...

Lee,

Read what you wrote    "The factory Gel-coat anti skid on my 16 is in perfect shape".  Why not plan your next sailing adventure and enjoy the perfect anti skid Gel-coat on your boat.

That's my 2 cents worth.

This is something I plan to do this fall cause I just didn't have time to refinish this boat this winter. I am ready now to go sailing and nothing is going to get in the way of that! Unfortunately my water is at 9700 ft so the lake is still frozen.

I have had a lifetime of car building (Customs and stuff) so it is not in my nature to leave something "as is". I like to personalize my stuff and this sailboat is no different to me. It is more then just a hobby of sailing it's also improving by boat to my tastes. I like to do things cause I can and I want unique things that nobody has plus it's fun to talk about it (Bench Racing)...

So this question has a two fold purpose. To research products for future use and to make conversation on this forum for me and anyone else thinking of doing this at some time in the future...

I'm actually thinking about doing this too.  My reasons are different.  The non-slip in the cockpit has many many small 'crazings' and cracks in it and rather than repairing all of them I'm hoping that painting or treating the non slip areas would seal these.  Then I could treat the rest of the gel coat on the deck with vertglass or polyglo and be all sealed and protected (the gel coat is kinda chalky, I'm worried if I don't do something it will rapidly deteriorate).

Any suggestions would be appretiated.

Lee:

Seems like I've read Don Casey painted his non-skid to a color of his liking.  He offered several options to the technique.  Google his name and I'm sure you'll find his site.

IMHO, if your texture is ok, then changing the color will work out fine as long as the coats are thin.  Worst case scenario, you loose the non-skin texture with the first application, then re-apply with non-skid granular material mixed in with the paint.

Anyway, hope this helps.  Let us know how it works out.
