Almost got the boat registered today.

Yesterday we went to everybody's favorite government office.  The DMV.  My appointment was at 10:15 and Joanie's at 3:15.  We left there around 4pm and just missed the 4:30 ferry home.  Today we went to the other DMV to register and title our vehicles, trailers, and boats.  (you can't do both at either office)  After spending $740 for taxes, title transfers, and plates for the truck, Jeep, and boat trailer, we were told we needed to mail in the application for the Compac because the computer shows it was already registered in NC.  Returning home I dug out the Compac file and sure enough, the original owner lived in Alexander, NC.  I Just happen to still have all the paperwork from the 1st owner to the 2nd owner, to me.   So with luck, the new title and registration will be waiting at the post office when we return from our 6700 mile road trip and I can finally splash her. 

I'm glad I filed away all the old paperwork instead of throwing it out.

I also still have the original owners manual and parts list.

Wow, NC is tough.

I bought my 23 in Alabama and drug it home to Mississippi.  Registration process was all by mail.  Copy of the Bill of Sale, MS is a title optional state, and printed out the registration form available online, and mailed them in with about $30 and I'm good for three years. State stickers came in about a week, but could launch with a copy of the paperwork that was mailed. Tag for the trailer took ten minutes at the courthouse, about another $25.

I was more concerned when I registered my Bateau FS14 skiff.  Hey, this is a home built, that might be a problem and I'll have to have a VIN issued.  But no, they come to you.  I filled out the form, mailed it in and waited for them to contact me.  After no one did I called and they said the officer for my area had been in the hospital with kidney stones and was behind, be patient.  They finally showed up, uniforms, guns and all, and I nervously had all my paperwork, plans, USCG capacity and max motor ratings, receipts for all the materials, and even pictures of the build process.  They walked around the boat remarked at how beautiful it was and commenced to finish the paperwork.  Asked if they wanted to see any of my data, they said no, it'll float.  Turns out, according to them, this in person thing is primarily to find stolen boats when someone requests a VIN.  He handed me the VIN sticker, showed me where it had to go and said that normally they are required to put it on but he would watch me because he did not want it to get on crooked and mess up my build. whole process took about 20 minutes.

Durn, things sure have become complicated! Back in the day, 1980-1989, we sailed our Compac 16 that entire decade and never even realized we had to register it in Virginia. We sold her with the Florida registration number still on her...also still wonder what happened to her.
