main sail reef points

The original main sail on my 79' CP-16 is still usable but does not have any reef points. Yesterday, while out in 20+ mph gusts I wished I could reef the main. I'm wondering about an easy fix like putting several layers of sail repair tape on each side of the sail where I want the reef points, and then using a hole punch to make the hole. Any comments?

Hi seaglen,

You may still be able to reef the main without the reef points.  I believe that some of the CP16s had roller reefing.  This means that the sail could be rolled onto the boom.  It is not as easy or as efficient as slab reefing, which needs the reef points, but I believe you may be able to reef the sail anyway.

I am unsure about the tape and whether or not that would hold with the amount of pressure on the sail.  I would check with Sailrite.  I think they have a kit with dacron patches.  They would also know if it would be possible to glue the patches on (3M 4200 or 5200?)as opposed to stitching them.

For what it's worth, all the strain on a reefed sail should be at the luff and leach.  The "reef points" across the belly of the sail are only used to gather the loose material; they are not designed to be load bearing.  The reef grommet at the luff and leach need to be reinforced to handle the stress....

Thanks Troy - I will try to roll the sail on the boom next time. Not very nautical but might work until I do something better.  The tape idea may not be a good one after all, but I don't want to go to a lot of trouble for an old sail .

I made these for my new loose footed main, but I've been using them with my full batten main for a quick reef that works...

I know it's not a new idea, but rather a variation on a theme... but hey, setting up your sails for the changing conditions makes for a happy boat.
