After a full year of using this app on my iPhone I can comfortably recommended it as a great free GPS navigation aid and speedometer for sailing and more.  The free version offers pretty much everything I'd want.  You can set waypoints and record tracks and it shows good info like top speed, time, and distance for any recorded track.  It's been fun going back and looking at races I've done on my catamaran.  It proved very valuable in the Apostle Islands and shows a lot of the major structure around the islands like permanent docks & lighthouses.  The display above the map is customizable to show 3 of any of quite a variety of date such as current speed, coordinates, course, elevation, etc.

It covers all of the data I need for lake sailing outside of depth.  My phone on a mount screwed to the lower hatch board gives me a pretty good view of the screen from the helm.  And the charging cord reaches the USB port next to my breaker panel.

On top of sailing I also use it deer hunting and for other general GPS needs.
