I have had a few leaks in my deck/hull joint also and plan to do a little caulking restoration. When I pulled back the rub rail last summer I noticed that was some sort of tape wrapped around the flange assembly. I spoke to Rich Hutchins today and among other things asked him about this tape. He said it was duct tape they used.  So I bought a roll of Gorilla duct tape to apply after I put in the 3M 5200.  Oh boy, I love working on sailboats..... almost time to put her in the water.  Steve

Even after reading all the posts about making sure the rub rail was warm, I went ahead and tried the resealing on a March day in Boise.  Not a brilliant move, although I was shocked at how bad the original sealant was.  In order to get the rub rail back on I had to resort to a brute force method that probably wasn't the smartest, but it worked.  I'd bolt one end of the rub rail in place and slipped the fastening bolt through the other end.  To this bolt I hooked a come-along with the other end hooked to my truck and I'd crank this a notch or two every few minutes to stretch the thing out.  After it was a few inches longer than needed, I'd release and work frantically to bolt it in place before it shrunk too far again.  The moral of the story is don't underestimate the strength of cold rubber.
