What Is This Likley Used For?

A previous owner installed the pictured eye on the bow of my CP 16.   I don't know what it is likely to be used for.  If I keep it, I'll reinstall it of course, but since I don't know what it is used for I don't know whether I need it.  Do any of you have something similar and if so, what do you use it for?  Thanks

The eye is used for the trailer winch connection.

I would not even hook a fish stringer to it.

Eye pad to run a jib down haul through?

If the fitting is through bolted, with a backing plate, it is a good strong point. I've considered a similar fitting for the tack of a wire luff furling jib I sometimes use. This would give some separation between the wire luff and the head stay and reduce interference when furling the jib.
It does look like the fitting for the winch strap/ safety chain, but that fitting is normally on the bow stem. If used for the safety chain, it would scar the boats finish.
Could be a lifting point. Not recommended!!
Have you asked the previous owner?

I wondered if it might be used in some sort of jib downhaul lash up.  It is poorly installed at present - a washer for a backing plate and not bedded.  The eye itself is chromed steel and the chrome is corroded, so if I keep the attachment, I'll replace the fitting and install it more strongly.  I didn't ask the previous owner about use.  With all the info coming my way during the walk around, I don't think I even noticed it.
