New Trailer Needed

Has anyone purchased a new trailer for their 16? I bought my boat without a trailer then scrambled to find one so that I could take the boat home. I found an overly large 5 Starr Load Rite that did the job but was not practical for daily use. I just sold it and now I want to buy a new trailer.

I want to know what others have done. The shipping charges for a Magic Tilt trailer from Florida makes it too expensive. I live in Rhode Island. All of the trailer dealers only sell trailers for motor boats and don't want to get involved customizing a trailer for a sailboat. What brand trailers do you have?

Andre

If you haven't done so yet, check with Hutchins to see if they have a boat or trailer delivery already coming up to anywhere near your area.  I bought my trailer through a Com-Pac dealer in CT and got a discounted rate on the delivery that way.  In my case the dealer arranged it. I bought a used Horizon Cat that lacked a trailer from him.  It may still prove to be too expensive but worth a try.

Andre,
Do you know the dealer's name and are they still in business?

Andre

I sure do and yes they are.

Gary Connolly was the broker/owner, in New London.  He treated me well.

Not that it'll get you anything, ha, ha but you can mention me to him.

Andre Casanova, boat was 2014 Horizon Cat purchased through him in April 2017

Thanks for passing that info along. I have called them twice and left them a message and haven't heard from them yet. Maybe on vacation. I did find a local trailer dealer; Walmsley Marine, that has their own brand of trailer. They have been in business for 50 years or so. I will have to do some modifications to fit my boat. The only thing I don't like is the tires are 12" radius while the tires on the stock trailer are 10" radius. Don't know if a two inch difference matters. Just waiting on a quote from a Load Rite dealer.

I don't think there should be a problem with 12" tires.  My 16 had 8" tires on the trailer.  I raised the fenders and replaced them with 12".  I am very pleased.  Have had no problem launching and travels at speed like a dream  Just my 2 cents.....

So I ended up buying this trailer. It has a GVWR of 1500lbs. and a load capacity of 1250lbs. I replaced the rollers and guides with the ones from my old trailer. These weighted less than what I removed. I weighted the motor and some other gear and the load is under 1250lbs. I think it'll be OK. What is the GVWR and load capacity of an original Magic Tilt trailer?

My label (from 1979) says 1300lbs carrying capacity, and (I believe) 1575lbs GVWR. The GVWR is hardly legible, but it definitely says 1300 lbs for the carrying capacity.

Thanks, I just saw that on your other post. My trailer's specs are little less, but I think she'll do. Have fun with your new boat.
