Mooring, Sampson Post

I just launched and moored my new to me 19. My mooring line does not fit into the cleats on the sides of the bow because the bow cleat is positioned very close to the bow and the splice of the loop is too thick for the side cleats. On my 16, I didn't have this problem as there is a Sampson post. The loop of the line would securely fit over the post and the mooring rope could then fit into the side cleat. This seems like a better setup. So my questions are, was the Sampson post standard on the 16s. And for those of you that moor your boat how are you securing the mooring line. Also what are those fixtures mounted on the sides that keep a line in place called. I called them side cleats.  Photo is of my 16 to show setup.

Don't think the Samson post is original, I haven't seen one on many and not on the MK-1 I sail.  For me, lines run from cleat on bow to dock, two lines fit the cleat.



I think you are talking about bow chocks.  I have a set yet to install.

Chafe is the enemy and is affected by seas and conditions where you moor. The best solution may be to replace the bow chocks with lager ones. That would allow you to use the same mooring pendant with chafe protection.  You may not need a pendant the size of your current one and could replace that. For a quick temporary solution loop the eye of a dock line through the eye on the pendant and back through itself. Run that through the chock to the cleat.

I don't want to change the mooring pendant setup as it is set and inspected by regulation. I did like the Samson post on my 16 because I felt that it was impossible to screw up. Not that a cleat is all that difficult to attach a line to. We had some strong gusty winds last year and the boat held her ground. I never had any of the sheets wrap up on it. And over all didn't seem to ever be in the way. So I have order a Samson post and have a set of 1" chocks waiting for me to pick up on Tuesday. In the mean time I sliced a section of fire hose and using some zip ties - I'm starting to love zip ties - secured the hose around the pendant to stop any chaff.

Yesterday the wind was blowing east, from my boat to a large catamaran, which, just guessing cost several million at least. There will more pricey boats mooring there as the season get along. Best to be safe and let someone else be liable.

Should have my first sail some day next week. I can hardly wait.

I received my Samson post the other day but I haven't mounted it yet. Never thought to replace the cleat with the Samson post like your boat. On my 16 the post is set back onto the deck which I found to be a handy location. A back plate was needed to mount it at that location though.
