Do I really need "winch grease" for this?   Or is trailer axle grease ok for lubricating the bearings.   Thanks

Tim Gardner

I used "Lubriplate" white grease.  Axel grease may be too viscous (heavy)

Axel grease will collect dirt and will affect the movement of the palls.  Use winch grease which is better and not that expensive.  A tube will last a long time.

20 years working on boats, I only recommend the winch grease because like a previous commentor said, viscosity is a big deal.

Actually, if they are Harken winches (most likely) they likely use plastic sleeves instead of bearings. The pawls are the main point of lubrication. If the plastic sleeves wear out, you can purchase new ones from Harken for a mere king's ransom.
