My Seidelmann has "hoods" over the ports. They similar to the ones on my truck. The ports have been left open during some nasty weather and water has never come in.

Years ago, Salty19 came up with a clever solution. He took 4" 45° pvc street elbows, sanded the rim until they fit, and installed them. It allows air flow, but no water. They can also be angled to get the most air.

I happen to have a couple of 90° elbows and used them, but 45° leaves more room.
I also cut a 1/4" piece of pvc with a chop saw and installed screens.

I've never removed the stock rudder blade while trailering. I just lock it in the down position and tie the tiller so it's straight.

I've heard that about ruddercraft, the stock one is just crazy bad, which is surprising from a company like Compac. Plus the one I have is the original and has the battle scars to prove it.

Certainly seems functional and minimalist. I spent Saturday capsizing my daysailer in 52 degree water, so it sounds like you had a better day of it, lol. Oh well, lake sailing on a blustery day is never a straightforward affair and the only casualty was my phone. I did wish I was out in the Compac when my back hit the water though.

I was considering fabricating a porthole cover screen with louvers to solve the rain dripping in problem, but I am concerned it would eliminate too much of the light unless I make them able to open/shut which is way too engineered for me. My second thought was something like the hoods that are used for traffic lights, but fashioned from brass or something similar that would be at least moderately attractive.

I know it's been a year now since last post, but I am currently starting to gather info on buying sails for my new-to-me CP19 (in addition to a ruddercraft rudder, the stock one is pretty heinous). Precision certainly seems to be the "flagship option" but I was wondering if anyone had experience dealing with other lofts and the price differentials.

I saw a video of some aussies who had some burgundy sails on a CP16 and it looked amazing, anyone have experience in going with a non-standard sail color and thoughts for or against it? The deep red really seemed to suit the Compac aesthetic.

Engine access on the CP27 is the best I've had on any boat I've owned. It's one of the reasons I purchased my 1989. Front access is provided by lifting the steps to the cabin, side and rear access through the port and starboard lockers. There are plywood panels that can be removed to make it even roomier if needed.

Quote from: crazycarl on October 27, 2024, 08:59:52 PMTrying to decide on 3 boats. One being a 1988 Compac 27.  How good is the engine access? I'm no mechanic, but if I needed to perform maintenance while cruising, I would like a boat with good engine access.

Com-Pac Sailors Lounge / Foil rudder construction: wou...

Mulling over building a foil rudder and this came to mind:  Great Stuff (expanding foam) one side of the stock rudder.  Cut two or three half-foil shapes out of light metal. Imbed them into the foam and use them as contouring guides.  With foam shaved/sanded/cussed into shape, West System three or four layers of glass over it, half as many bent over the edges, and smooth, duplicate on the other side including the half-as-many layers over edges.  Paint or gelcoat.

Thoughts?  More work than it's worth?  I found a Compac 16 foil rudder on line for $425 with the satisfaction/bragging rights of DYI.

When George Wallace first took office as Alabama's governor, he made a big deal about selling Alabama's "navy," its two huge yachts in the general class of the one pictured above, and its "air force," a fleet of five planes of various sizes.  I don't know what happened to the planes but he "sold" the yachts to two state agencies, one of them the new University of South Alabama and their use was continued without interruption.
