Title: Who has the skinny on sails for the 16?
Post by: JBoyle on November 29, 2016, 05:00:36 PM
Howdy!

I'm looking for cost efficient wind power. Any insight to who/where/how to get some decent sails that won't break the bank would be most welcomed.

Please and thank you.

Cheers!

We have said it many times....NATIONAL SAILS.

I went with Peak Sails and had a bad experience. Next time I'm going to try National. I bought a 135 genoa for my 23 from Super Sail Makers, and was happy with the sail. But gonna give National a try next time.

BTW - one caveat- the battens were too large for the pockets....National offered to re-send correct ones, I just cut and sanded to length, they worked fine.

I wrote an extensive post on my experience getting sails for my boat. National Sails was the most competent, the cheapest, and best customer service. Don't waste you're time anywhere else.

I just want to make sure everyone knows that ComPac sells sails also.  Got a new furling jib for my 16 III last year from them; boy am I happy. Well made and fit perfectly... and the price was competitive. I've always had good service from the factory over the years.

Normally I would Kick, but I am in my new laid back cruiser mode at the moment (translate between boats). Unless there is an E Scow that keeps changing his heading...Arrrrrgggggggg! How come J Boats are so pricey??????? None of this means much to many of you but Kick and Rich are laughing...Seriously I have several posts about buying a new set from Doyle. Do a quick search and get your sails made for your sailing area, how you use your boat, and for your specific boat measurements...Best of luck.

I've not purchased sails for the compac, but have for the Mac 26X I own.  OEM sails on the Mac were Doyle (at least on my boat).  The main was blown out, and after meeting Judy B from Hyde Sail in San Francisco, purchased a main sail from her.  It felt about twice the weight of my Doyle sail and was about equal in price to the OEM Doyle sail.

Judy advertises on the TSBB site and I've found her to be easy to work with.  She wants to know what you sail, where you sail, what kind of performance are you looking for, etc.

To me it would be worth a call or email to ask her a price.  I've had and heard only positive feedback about her.

Standard disclaimers:  Just a happy customer.

JBoyle - You didn't indicate your location. Anyway, North Sails New Jersey has an excellent reputation. They recently repaired a damaged CP16 mainsail for me and the price was reasonable and the workmanship excellent. ***** Obviously, I'm pleased with them.
