Title: Pilot House Addition to Compac 16
Post by: Jason on October 18, 2016, 09:04:50 PM
Hi Everyone,

I've decided to take the leap and add a Pilothouse onto my 1981 MKI  Compac 16 "Lillyanna".  Conceptual drawing below.  My goal is to create a true pilot house, to use while steering the boat, especially when fishing.  I will also be adding outriggers and downriggers (which can be quickly unpinned).  The mast tabernacle will remain in-place, and the ship will be able to be rigger with the same mast and boom, albeit with smaller mailsail area and higher mainsail center of effort; the final height of the pilothouse has not been finalized.  I recognize the implications of all this and am willing to accept the compromises, and take on the project.  The steering gear will be attached further astern then shown in the scale of the drawing, and I plan on implementing a hinged tiller extension to open up cockpit space overall.

I am building a SCAMP sailboat at the moment, and this will provide me with a two sailboats, so I am looking to convert the Compac 16 into a hybrid trawler/sailboat.  We'll see how it goes and I will keep you updated with my feedback and progress on the project.

I will post occasional updates here and you can check the build-log at
http://www.argobuilder.com/compac-16-fishing-trawler.html (http://www.argobuilder.com/compac-16-fishing-trawler.html), if you'd like.

So Jason, you'll have a 16  with standing headroom while my 23 does not. Life can be unfair at times, ayuh! I love the Scamps and have been tempted to build one since I first saw them on the pages of Small Craft Advisor. But I'm currently leaning toward a Goat Island Skiff. Or maybe I should finish the many projects around the house first before the Admiral murders or divorces me, not sure what order she's planning.
This looks like an interesting projects...I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

Excellent! A pilothouse on a Compac 16 is a brilliant idea. And I love watching someone else work. I finished mine last year and don't regret it

Hi Everyone!

Hope you are enjoying the winter.  I have completed the mahogany trawler crane (mast and boom) and have completed the rebuild of the used downriggers that I bought, and have built the downrigger platforms that will mount on the gunwhales, and am now working on the pilothouse itself.  Defiant.....I have seen your work on your pilothouse and am very impressed, nice work.  Mine will be a Joubert Okoume marine plywood pilothouse, spar varnished on the sides and enameled on top.

Pilot house assembly is done, the whole thing is sanded, holes filled in, epoxy fillets are done, and now I am giving it two epoxy coats (photo here is after one epoxy coat), attach the top, then final paint and varnish.

Hi Everyone,

I crossed the Rubicon and sawed the top of my beloved Compac 16 off this weekend.   The pilot house fit on well, as did the outriggers, downriggers, and trawler mast and hoist.   All in all I am very pleased with the design and the finished product.  Photo's below.  I have also posted a photo below of what the cross section of the Compac roof looks like.  Still have to finish the companionway hatch, which I will do this week.   I will be buying new tanbark sails and will post over the summer what she looks like fitted out with the mast and sails.

Hi Everyone,

Built new mahogany companionway hatch rails, and okoume hatch boards, all epoxied and then spar varnished.  Weatherstripped the doors.  Added stainless steel pilothouse roof grab rails (drilled oversize mounting holes, filled the holes with epoxy, drilled the final mounting holes, mounted with stainless steel hardware).  Wired up the mast-top light (LED).  Launched the boat on Lake Michigan from Milwaukee for an equipment test and everything worked well.  Spring is here!

Trailering configuration below.  I tried trailering with the rudder mounted and the tiller lashed (first time I've tried this) and it worked well; saved time at the launch.

Very cool!

I may have missed it above, but what was the thinking about putting up a wooden mast & boom? Regardless, that's a great looking pilot house!

Hi Bruce,

The thinking regarding the mast/hoist went something like this.....wouldn't it be cool to have an old-fashioned fully functioning wooden trawler mast and hoist on this Compac 16 Pilothouse?....

I use it to raise a flag on, and for the mast top light, both of which it is overkill for.   That said, if I come across any lobster pots in Lake Michigan, I can use it to raise those.

Yo ho ho,

Jason
