Use my array of nissan 3hp 2s for the few times I actually need the iron sail each year. They are all short shafts. They seem adequate as long as its not choppy and I stay near the stern.
Those of you with long shafts, do they stay partially in the water when tilted up and under sail? If not, what brand?
I have a Tohatsu 4hp long shaft. When I tilt it up it is dry.

I've had both short and long shafts on different 16's, both with the typical adjustable mount. I know my short-shaft would come out of the water in big chop. As long as I stay in the cockpit, my long-shaft will not come out of the water. If I go to the bow though, the long-shaft will sometimes pop out. With the adjustable mount in the up position, both short and long shaft cleared the water no problem when you tilted them up.
My conclusion? If you already have a trusty short shaft, it will be fine. If you're in the market for a motor? Get a long-shaft.
