Title: flotation material
Post by: seaglen on November 17, 2006, 10:06:15 PM
My '79 CP 16 came with foam-like flotation material glued to inside bottom of hull (below quarter berths). It is in pieces approx. 6" x 18".  It is almost all water logged and I want to replace it.  Can anyone help me with a flotation material that is solid and/or water proof and comes in sizes suitable for this use. Thanks. Glenn

Somebody recently reported that Hutchens installs this foam both for floatation and also to give the hull additional strength in the area where the hull could be damaged where a forklift would raise it.  Seems reasonable.  It appears to me to be  the same simple spray foam you can buy at the hardware store that hardens as it drys and used as wall insulation.

For what it's worth, I read on a different forum that it's polyurethane foam.  That might be what's in the can, too.  I don't know.  Jamestown Distributors sells the poly foam.  It seems there are different types with different expansion rates.

I think there's a small insulation quality about it, too, for both sound and temperature.
